Nature and landscape

The protected area near Pohanský hrad covers 224 hectares and is considered the most valuable area in the Gemer part of the Cerová vrchovina highlands. The remains of a Celtic stone wall and a rock settlement with 31 pseudokarst caves can also be found near Pohanský hrad.

The mountains of Paláska, Magin Hrad, Bik and Kameň are located in the surroundings of Rimavská Sobota District. A 17-metre-high observation tower stands on Maginhrad. From there, views extend from Kráľova hoľa across the Rimava Valley to Hungary.

The Drienčanský kras educational trail is 7.54 km long, has 15 stops and can be visited independently all year round. It leads through the protected Hikóriový porast karst area and then runs along the Teplý Vrch Reservoir, on whose shore there is a birdwatching hide. The route passes through the protected karst area; the Malá drienčanská jaskyňa cave is open to the public, while the nearby Veľká drienčanská jaskyňa cave is not accessible to visitors as it is a wintering site for a bat colony.

The Kurinecká dubina educational trail is suitable for all age groups and offers easy hiking with little elevation gain. The circular route is 4.55 km long and starts and ends at the Kurinec bus stop; there is also a shorter version of approximately 2.6 km. The educational trail includes a viewpoint and ten information boards about the local nature, protected areas and changes in the landscape.

The Zvernica Teplý Vrch educational trail is 2,920 metres long and has eight stops. Visitors can learn about fallow deer and mouflon, as well as flora and fauna.

Activities

Kurinec-Zelená voda offers swimming in the reservoir or in pools with drinking and geothermal water at 33 °C. Facilities include a children's pool, a water slide complex and sports courts, as well as boat, pedal boat and paddleboard rentals.

The observatory in Rimavská Sobota has an astropark open to the public with planet models and an arboretum. In suitable weather, sunspots and the city panorama can be observed through telescopes.

Sokoliarstvo Kanát presents 70 birds of prey and organises falconry demonstrations. Visitors can also experience direct contact with birds of prey there.

The In the Footsteps of Maginhrad educational trail presents a local legend at twelve stops and is accompanied by a storyteller named Bedár.

Culture and history

The Gemersko-Malohontské Museum documents the natural and cultural heritage of the Gemer-Malohont region. It displays the Egyptian mummy of the woman Tasheritnetiak from Abusir el-Meleq; two permanent exhibitions are also open to the public.

The restored water mill in Veľké Teriakovce serves the public as a regional museum of agriculture, milling, baking and traditional crafts. It houses a collection of Kyjatice toys, as well as a traditional Teriakovo room and kitchen. The water mill is a national cultural monument.

The remains of Hajnáčka Castle date from the 13th century and stand on a basalt rock above Hajnáčka. A marked route leads to the castle from the village square; from the wooden castle gate, a short footpath continues to the castle rock. The well-maintained grounds have multilingual information boards, wooden railings and steps carved into the rock.

The Gothic church in the Malé Teriakovce district has a painted wooden coffered ceiling considered one of the oldest preserved in Slovakia.
