Bezdan: Nature, Canals and Special Discoveries
Accommodation in Bezdan
Bezdan combines a distinctive waterscape with nature experiences, cycling opportunities and unusual cultural stories. Those looking for an apartment or holiday house for their vacation can choose the location according to their own daily plans: the focus is on the protected Gornje Podunavlje nature reserve, paths along the water, boat trips and special examples of the region’s craft and architectural history.
Canals, the Danube and the Gornje Podunavlje Nature Reserve
An important landmark is the Bezdan lock. It is located at the confluence of the present-day Vrbas–Bezdan Canal and the Danube. It is also notable from an architectural and engineering perspective: the Bezdan lock was the first structure in Europe where underwater concreting was used. The protected Category I Gornje Podunavlje nature reserve also extends along the left bank of the Danube in the area around Bezdan. Near Bezdan, the Bajski kanal flows into the Veliki bački kanal. These waterways give a stay a clear landscape focus, without requiring culture enthusiasts to forgo historical destinations.
Karapandža: Educational Trail, Cycle Route and Boat Trips
The Karapandža Eco-Centre is located beside the Kenđija weekend settlement in Bezdan, on the bank of the Bajski kanal. The circular “Karapandža” educational trail is 4 km long and features information boards, a birdwatching tower and a rest area. This makes it possible to combine a day in nature with a variety of interests: observations, short breaks and information about the surroundings are all part of the route, along with outdoor activity.
In the protected area, you can cycle along a stony path that partly follows the “Karapandža” educational trail. Those planning a cycling tour can follow the route of the EuroVelo 6 trail, which leads via Kolut to Bezdan. An asphalted route branches off the main route to the Karapandža Eco-Centre; from there, you can continue through the Gornje Podunavlje Special Nature Reserve towards Apatin. When choosing your accommodation, it is therefore particularly relevant whether you want to use Bezdan as a starting point for nature and cycling experiences or for a varied combination of landscape and culture.
There are also various options on the water. Motorboat trips accompanied by a guide, as well as independent rowing-boat trips, start at a paved landing stage on the Bajski kanal. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between a guided boat trip and an independent rowing-boat outing, without limiting your stay to a single activity.
Crafts and History in Bezdan
In addition to canals and nature, Bezdan offers distinctive cultural points of interest. Bezdan damask is handwoven from silk and cotton. The weaving looms use punched-card patterns dating from the 1870s and are from the same period. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity was built between 1710 and 1720. The Perfume Museum is presented as Serbia’s first perfume museum. These destinations add extra themes to a stay and are suitable for days when cycling or the waterscape are not the main focus.
Choosing Bezdan as a Holiday Destination
Accommodation in Bezdan is particularly well suited to your plans if you want to combine nature, water, cycling and cultural-historical discoveries. You can structure your days in different ways: explore the 4 km-long educational trail, cycle along the stony path in the protected area, plan a boat trip on the Bajski kanal or learn about damask, a chapel and the Perfume Museum. This keeps the choice between an apartment and a holiday house closely connected to your preferred travel itinerary, without requiring a specific daily schedule.
