Šumarak: Dune Landscape on the Edge of Deliblatska peščara

Šumarak was established at the transition of the high linear sand dune northeast of Kovin. This location explains the settlement’s distinctive landscape: the area includes both dunes and shallow depressions. Hatarica is also located in the Šumarak area and, at 105 metres, is the highest dune in the low sandy landscape. Šumarak itself lies at approximately 100 metres above sea level.

The surface waters in the area include smaller ponds and marshes. Šumarak therefore offers different landscape forms within a limited thematic area. When planning your trip, the key question is whether you would like to combine dunes and sandy formations with wetland areas.

A Place with Several Names

The history of Šumarak dates back to the period before it was recognised as a settlement. The place was first mentioned in 1893 under the name Emanueltelep. From 1929 to 1946, Šumarak bore the name Mali Dubovac, before receiving settlement status in 1947. These clearly distinct names in chronological succession give the local history its own sequence and make it an interesting part of the travel experience.

At the beginning of the 1920s, the inhabitants of Šumarak received land as a gift from state authorities. The place consists of a larger collection of farmsteads and wine houses used as weekend homes on the edge of the high sandy landscape. The name “Sveta Hedviga”, or Saint Hedwig, is also associated with Šumarak.

Šumarak is connected by an asphalt road to Kovin and most of the settlements in the municipality of Kovin. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore consider not only the landscape but also the role that Kovin and other places in the municipality play in your personal travel plans.
