Valjevo combines a vibrant urban history with special experiences in nature. In the historic trading quarter of Tešnjar, you can encounter traditional crafts, while museums, old buildings and memorial sites tell different chapters of the past. Added to this are the Gradac River, Petnička Cave and a longer walking route that begins in the park on the Jadar and continues along a path through Pećina Forest Park. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can therefore consider whether cultural discoveries, walks or a varied combination should be the focus of your trip.

Tešnjar and the History of Valjevo

Tešnjar developed at the beginning of the 19th century as the trading quarter of the city of Valjevo. Traditional craft workshops produce candles and practise saddlery, pottery, weaving and coppersmithing, among other crafts. This combination of craftsmanship and urban history makes the quarter an accessible introduction to local culture. Families travelling together can discover different materials, working methods and forms of traditional expertise here without limiting the day to a single museum experience.

One of the notable historic buildings is Muselimov Konak. The building was erected in the 18th century and is considered the oldest surviving building in Valjevo. Its cellar also recalls a dramatic event in Serbian history: at the beginning of 1804, the princes Aleksa Nenadović and Ilija Birčanin were imprisoned there before being taken for execution in the event known as “Seča knezova”. The Nenadović Tower completes this historical picture. Jakov Nenadović and his son Jevrem built it in the spring of 1813 to store ammunition belonging to the insurgents; today, the tower houses a museum exhibition.

Religious and modern memorial sites also add their own distinctive accents. The Church of the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God is the oldest religious building in Valjevo. The Monument to the Fighters of the Revolution was unveiled in 1960, and the surrounding grounds are designed as a memorial park. Brankovina is also home to the Church of the Holy Archangels, built in 1830 as an endowment of Prota Mateja Nenadović. Art-interested travellers can view works by the academic painter Ljuba Popović in the permanent exhibition of the Moderna galerija Valjevo.

Museums, Paths and River Landscapes

The National Museum of Valjevo presents scenographic and multimedia elements as well as spatial reconstructions in its permanent exhibition “Treća dimenzija prošlosti – pogled iz budućnosti”. As a result, history is conveyed not only through individual objects but also through designed scenes and spaces. Another form of discovery begins in the park on the Jadar. From there, a longer walking route continues along a path through Pećina Forest Park. Those who enjoy walking can plan this route as a focus for a full day and combine a cultural programme with physical activity.

The Gradac River is considered one of the cleanest rivers in Serbia and shapes the nature-oriented side of the trip. Petnička Cave contains chambers, channels, an underground cave river, a lake, as well as stalactite formations and other cave formations. Finds of Ice Age fauna and traces of human presence from the distant past have also been discovered there. The range of experiences therefore extends from a walk in the countryside to an exploration shaped by nature and prehistory.

Travel Planning Based on Your Interests

Valjevo can be reached via the railway line running from Belgrade to the Adriatic port of Bar. Those arriving by train can incorporate this connection into their travel plans. For culture-oriented days, Tešnjar, the museums, historic buildings and memorial sites take centre stage. Those who prefer experiences in nature can focus their plans more on the Gradac, the park on the Jadar, Pećina Forest Park and Petnička Cave. A holiday apartment in Valjevo can serve as a starting point for the desired combination of history, art and landscape, without requiring you to commit to just one type of trip.

A seasonal cultural highlight is Tešnjarske večeri. It traditionally takes place at the beginning of August and lasts six days; the programme includes educational and creative workshops. If this period fits your trip, it can add an event atmosphere to your stay. To compare other destinations, you can also visit Vrelo, Gornja Toplica, Mionica, Osečina, Popadić, Berkovac, Slavkovica and Ljig.
