Mali Zvornik – Zvorničko jezero and Cultural History

Water, the Lake, and Special Events

Zvorničko jezero stretches 25 kilometers upstream from the 45-meter-high dam near Zvornik and Mali Zvornik. Kayaking is possible on the lake. Since 1998, the Somovijada has been held there every summer on the last weekend of July. The event is therefore one of the recurring summer dates that connect the lake with a local tradition.

Individual events from 2026 also demonstrate the thematic variety surrounding the water. The 22nd “Zlatni kotlić” fish-soup cooking competition was scheduled to take place at the beach in Sakara. From July 23 to 25, 2026, the 15th lake regatta was also scheduled as part of the traditional event “Drina je smisao života.” The 19th “Plivanje za Bogojavljenski krst” is a traditional religious-sporting event at Zvorničko jezero near the hydroelectric power plant in Mali Zvornik.

Underground History and Archaeological Traces

In the center of Mali Zvornik, the underground city of Karađorđević is located inside the rock, near the bridge of King Alexander I Karađorđević. The complex comprises around 75 rooms and approximately 1.5 kilometers of passageways. It was built in the 1930s as a secret military command center for King Alexander in the event of war. For visitors interested in political history, unusual structures, and hidden rooms, it represents a particularly distinctive point of interest.

Another highlight is the Orlovine archaeological site. It contains the remains of fortifications from the Early Byzantine period and the early Middle Ages. The remains of the structures are described as being approximately 1,400 and 1,000 years old, respectively. A newly constructed path to the Orlovine site has been completed. Crkva Časnog krsta – Mali Ostrog is a rock church carved into a cave in Mali Zvornik. Its cross-shaped floor plan and its dimensions of 33 meters in length, width, and height each make it another unusual cultural site.

The local-history museum collection and exhibition “Vizantijski koreni Malog Zvornika” was opened in the gallery of the “17. septembar” Library. Artifacts from the Orlovine archaeological site are intended to be preserved and displayed as part of the collection and exhibition. Parts of the legacy of King Alexander I Karađorđević, preserved in the cultural and historical complex of the underground city of Karađorđević, are also intended to be included.
