Regattas and special experiences on the Drina

The Drina is the setting for several traditional events. The Drinska Regata Ljubovija has been held for more than two decades. The Ljubovija Municipal Tourism Organisation holds it every year on the second Saturday in July. Its water route runs from Rogačica to Ljubovija over 40 kilometres.

Another combination of sport and riverside scenery is the SUP regatta “Ljubovija – Na veslu priča”. It takes place on a section of the Drina from Gornja Trešnjica to the ethno-village of Vrhpolje. In Ljubovija, swimming for the Bogojavljenski Cross on the Drina has also traditionally taken place since 2007. This swimming event is included in Serbia’s National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The two events show different aspects of the relationship between the town and the river: one is a longer sporting water route, while the other is a religiously and culturally shaped tradition.

Nature and hiking in the municipality

Away from the water, the surrounding area also offers specific destinations for active days out. The demanding Ljubovija–Bele Vode–Tornička Bobija trail is 25.4 kilometres long and forms part of the European long-distance hiking trail E7, which runs through western Serbia. Another natural area is the canyon of the Trešnjica River, which lies within the special nature reserve in the municipality of Opština Ljubovija. In its surroundings, a 7-kilometre route is known as “Đačka staza”. This gives you both a demanding 25.4-kilometre route and a shorter 7-kilometre trail in the vicinity of the canyon to choose from when planning your trip. The stone arch bridge “Rimski most”, also known as “Jerinin most”, spans the Ljuboviđa and dates back to Roman times.

Church, festivals and regional cuisine

The “Crkva Svetog Preobraženja” is part of Ljubovija’s cultural heritage. It is an example of ecclesiastical architecture from the first half of the 20th century and was built in the style of the medieval Moravian school of architecture. Construction took place from 1932 to 1939, and the church was consecrated on 21 September 1940. An annual traditional concert by the “Azbukovica” cultural and artistic association adds to the town’s cultural life.

You can get to know regional specialities at Gastro Fest. It takes place every year on the second Saturday in May and gives visitors the opportunity to sample dishes. The programme includes competitions in preparing fish soup, goulash, kačamak and traditional Serbian dishes. The “Azbukovački bazar” event also takes place on the streets of Ljubovija on 8 November. The all-day exhibition features handicrafts, traditional crafts, fruit, vegetables, flowers, food and souvenirs.

The fifth edition of the “Duhovne svečanosti Azbukovice” opened from 20 to 24 September with the exhibition “Predeli, stari zanati i umeća – skrivena baština Srbije” and a lecture by Prof. Dr Boris Stojkovski about Saint Sava. Such cultural events give your trip an additional focus alongside nature and outdoor activities.
