Zlot: Caves, Canyon and Nature Experiences

Zlot is a destination for anyone wishing to plan a trip among protected landscapes, impressive caves and archaeological traces. The focal point is Lazarev Canyon on the edge of the Kučaj Mountains. The natural monument encompasses the catchment area of the Zlotska reka, a tributary of the Crni Timok, and combines distinctive karst formations with remarkable plant diversity.

Protected Landscape Around Lazarev Canyon

Lazarev Canyon covers 1,755.50 hectares, of which 1,175.30 hectares lie within the cadastral areas of Zlot I and Zlot II. The protected natural monument is subject to a Category II protection regime. More than 700 plant species and subspecies have been recorded in this area. This scale makes the canyon not merely a backdrop for individual excursions, but an independent natural area that you can consciously take into account when planning your trip.

The cave world is grouped under the collective name “Zlotske pećine”. It includes various speleological features, each with its own character. Vernjikica is a dry ponor cave. Its Colosseum chamber has a diameter of more than 55 metres and a maximum vault height of 50.7 metres. The 11.5-metre-high stalagmite Kolos is considered the symbol and protective emblem of Vernjikica. Stojkova ledenica also displays a distinctive karst form, with horizontal and vertical sections of passage.

Caves Between Nature and Archaeology

Lazareva pećina is an important archaeological site with three cultural horizons. The site is attributed to the Eneolithic period, the 4th to 3rd millennium BC. Numerous copper objects were found there, including needles, awls and daggers. At the same time, Lazareva pećina is legally protected as a natural resource. Anyone interested in the connection between landscape history and the human past will find a different way of experiencing Zlot here than on a purely nature-focused trip.

The range of caves also includes the 723-metre-long Hajdučica Cave with diverse cave formations, the approximately half-as-long Mandina Cave with stalactites and stalagmites, and the 180-metre-long Water Cave. These differences help you define your personal focus: You can concentrate on large underground spaces, typical dripstone formations, archaeological traces or the karst landscape as a whole. The Mining and Metallurgy Museum in Bor also preserves artefacts from Zlotska pećina and Lazareva pećina.

Planning Hiking and Accommodation in Zlot

A hike through Lazarev Canyon can begin at Lazareva pećina. At the same time, there is no developed path in the canyon. When looking for a holiday apartment or other accommodation in Zlot, you should therefore first decide whether to focus on caves, archaeology, nature observation or a combination of these topics.
