Discover Treixedo: Circular Trails, Cultural Heritage and the Ecopista do Dão
Accommodation in Treixedo
Treixedo combines remarkable history with trails through woodland and river landscapes. Those planning a trip featuring culture, activity and distinctive townscapes will find various points of interest here: a 9.52-kilometre circular trail, historic buildings and the Ecopista do Dão along the route of a former railway line. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore decide whether you would primarily like to get to know the area through its history, a circular trail or a longer route along the river.
Discover Treixedo on the circular trail
The Percurso de Treixedo begins on Rua do Calvário next to the sports pavilion and the former primary school of Treixedo. From the parish church area, the circular trail leads through woodland towards Granjal. Its points of interest include the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Saúde and the old Treixedo railway station. This means the route can be viewed not only as a sporting trail, but also as an opportunity to connect various historical and landscape-related points of interest.
A particularly distinctive section is located near Granjal: this is where the Percurso de Treixedo reaches the Poço do Banho. Since 1877, sulphurous and therapeutic spring water has been channelled there into a kind of small open-air thermal baths. This combination of trail, local history and a distinctive spring site gives the circular route its own character. At 9.52 kilometres, its length provides a concrete point of reference when planning your day.
Culture between the church, coat of arms and charter
Nossa Senhora da Assunção is an 18th-century church on the southern edge of Treixedo’s built-up area. One of the town’s cultural points of interest is a grave carved into the rock near the church. Roman remains are also part of Treixedo’s notable cultural heritage. Those interested in older traces and sacred sites can combine these themes with the circular trail without reducing the town to a single attraction.
Treixedo’s history also reaches back to the charter that the town received from King Manuel on 16 March 1514. The Pelourinho de Treixedo was classified as an imóvel de interesse público by Decree No. 23,122 of 11 October 1933. The former Pelourinho de Treixedo symbolised the town’s former autonomy. The historic character of the area also includes the abandoned Solar do Torreão, also known as Visconde de Treixedo, which the circular trail passes. The building has a family coat of arms and a private chapel.
River landscapes and the Ecopista do Dão
For a different kind of day out, the area around Treixedo offers the Ecopista do Dão. It was built along the route of the former railway branch line that connected Santa Comba Dão with Viseu. The Ecopista do Dão was officially opened in early July 2011, after the former Dão railway line had been closed. In the area around Treixedo, it runs from the old Treixedo railway station along the River Dão to the metal bridge at Granjal.
On the section between the railway bridge and Treixedo railway station, the route follows the river. Oaks, cork oaks and strawberry trees grow there. This creates a clear contrast with the culturally and historically focused circular trail: here, the former railway route, the river and the vegetation take centre stage. A holiday apartment or holiday home in Treixedo can therefore be a suitable base if you would like your trip to include both the town’s history and the routes in the surrounding area.
