Resende combines regional specialities, historic sites and very different ways to spend your holiday. At the heart of it are Vila de Resende, the Douro Valley and the surrounding area, where culture, landscapes and active experiences complement one another. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Resende, you can choose to focus your trip on museums and festivals, culinary discoveries or longer tours.

Culture and history in Resende

The Museu Municipal de Resende offers permanent ethnographic and archaeological exhibitions featuring local collections. There is also a space for temporary exhibitions, as well as exhibition rooms dedicated to the Rio Douro and the engineer Eng.º Edgar Cardoso. A visit to the museum is therefore particularly suitable for anyone who would like to learn more about the history, regional way of life and relationship with the river.

The wider area is also home to notable historic buildings. The Igreja de São Martinho de Mouros was built in the 13th century and contains paintings from the workshop of the Mestres de Ferreirim, dated to around 1530. The church of the Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Cárquere combines Gothic and Manueline elements. The Ponte da Panchorra is a bridge of traditional vernacular architecture on the Rio Cabrum at an altitude of around 1,000 metres. On 9 April 2013, it was classified as a Monument of Public Interest.

The Jardim Municipal was created around 1934 and later named Jardim 25 de Abril. The Parque Urbano provides space for outdoor leisure and cultural activities, as well as views over the Douro Valley. A memorial commissioned by the Câmara Municipal de Resende is intended to highlight the municipality's main activity and has also become a tourist attraction.

Cherries, Cavacas and regional festivals

Resende can also be discovered through its culinary traditions. The Festival da Cereja takes place in Vila de Resende and includes exhibitions and the sale of cherry-related products. At the Centro Interpretativo da Cereja, a museum space is dedicated to cherries. A permanent exhibition room and an orchard with several cherry varieties provide further insight into the subject.

The Festa das Cavacas takes place in Vila de Resende on 30 April and 1 May. It promotes Cavaca as one of the most characteristic specialities of the traditional regional confectionery culture. The programme includes handicrafts, liqueurs, jams and regional wines. There are also performances by popular music groups, children's entertainment and stalls where more than 20 producers offer the sweet treat. The Rota das Cerejas de Resende combines a train journey with an exclusive programme. The Festa da Labareda, meanwhile, is a folk tradition that celebrates local identity and culture through music, socialising and entertainment.

Active days and special landscapes

For cycling tourists, the Centro Cyclin’Portugal de Montemuro in the wider area includes nine circular routes with 122 signposted kilometres and 302 kilometres of available routes. The main entrance is in Felgueiras, Resende. Anyone wishing to include a longer route in their plans should consider the Grande Rota de Montemuro, which is 57 km long. The short circular route PR1 RSD – Vale do Cabrum Superior starts and ends in Ovadas de Baixo, near the Ponte e Parque Fluvial de Ovadas.

Further excursions lead to a range of landscapes and leisure activities. The Parque Fluvial de Porto de Rei has a landing stage for joining tourist boat trips. Its restaurant serves river fish in escabeche and freshwater eels. The Miradouro do Penedo de São João is suitable for climbing and abseiling. Anyone planning to make swimming a regular part of their trip will find a 6-lane sports pool and a teaching and leisure pool at the Piscinas Municipais Cobertas; there is also an exceptional panoramic view of the Rio Douro.

The right location for planning your trip

The best basis for choosing your accommodation depends on which of these sides of Resende interests you most. For museums, local history and the festivals of Vila de Resende, it is worth searching with Resende as your starting point. If you are mainly planning cycling routes, river landscapes, boat trips or destinations in the wider area, you should choose your holiday apartment based on the excursions you actually intend to take. This keeps the decision aligned with your preferred pace of travel: cultural discoveries and regional specialities can be just as central as active days involving longer routes and special landscape experiences.

For further orientation, you can also view Miomães and Anreade/adega as destinations in their own right.
