Lamego between Douro culture and Baroque history

Lamego combines the cultural landscape of the Douro with impressive religious architecture, historic routes and green spaces. The city lies on the southern bank of the Douro; the Alto Douro has been shaped by around two thousand years of winegrowing. Lamego is therefore a suitable destination for anyone who wants to combine culture, landscapes and a variety of day trips during their stay.

Baroque stairways, churches and urban history

One of the most striking experiences is the Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. The present-day Baroque granite building was begun in 1750; its design is probably attributed to Nicolau Nasoni. The sanctuary can be reached via a Baroque staircase with 686 steps. Anyone planning to use this route should take the distance into account when organising their day. The Igreja das Chagas also tells the story of the city’s religious history: it is the only surviving building of the former Chagas convent, founded in 1588, and is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público.

The Sé de Lamego offers another historical highlight. Construction of the present building began in 1159, and it was dedicated to Santa Maria and Saint Sebastian in 1175. The façade construction campaign took place between 1508 and 1515 according to plans by the architect João Lopes. In the Igreja do Desterro, dating from 1640, the focus is on gilded woodcarvings and religious paintings from the 18th century. The Museu de Lamego complements these impressions with collections of furniture, tapestries, paintings and sculpture.

Archaeology and theatre as special discoveries

At the Núcleo Arqueológico da Porta dos Figos, a visitor tour leads to objects found on site. These include a Roman coin hoard from the 4th century. A holographic projection on an interactive screen also provides insight into the cemetery and the bioanthropological data of those buried there. Overall, the centre documents more than two thousand years of urban development in Lamego.

The Teatro Ribeiro Conceição also combines the present with history. The building was initially constructed in 1727 as the Hospital da Misericórdia de Lamego and was later converted into an events hall. Following renovation, it reopened on 23 February 2008. When planning your trip, you can therefore combine this place with a tour of the historic city without having to limit your stay to a single area of interest.

Routes, gardens and the Douro

If you are looking for exercise and scenery along the way, the Caminho dos Monges offers a longer route: the trail runs for approximately 19.8 kilometres within Lamego. Shorter or more leisurely stays can be combined with a visit to the Jardim da República. The garden was created from the former Campo do Tablado; it is home to the “O Lamego” fountain, built in 1830 and later relocated to the slope of the garden.

The Parque Biológico de Lamego is located in a green natural area where you can learn about the local fauna and flora. At the Parque de Santo Estevão near Remédios, there are several paths, picnic areas and a diverse selection of tree species. For a trip combining different interests, such natural destinations can provide a contrast to churches, museums and historic buildings. In addition, Douro Feeling, a tourism company based in Lamego, offers wine tours and other experiences in the Douro Valley.

Which accommodation suits your travel plans?

When looking for a holiday apartment in Lamego, you can first consider what will shape your days: religious architecture and museums, a longer route, nature experiences or the Douro wine landscape. The Cisterna de Lamego was adapted for public visits and converted into an exhibition space dedicated to the city’s history. The old centre of the Castelo de Lamego is entered through the Porta dos Figos and the Porta do Sol. Such destinations give your trip a range of cultural points of interest.
