Vila Nova Da Cerveira: Culture and Trails along the Minho

Vila Nova de Cerveira combines the history of a fortified settlement with art, river landscapes and trails along the Minho. Castles, Churches and Contemporary Art

The Castelo de Cerveira was built around 1320 at the command of the monarch D. Dinis to defend the newly founded settlement of Vila Nova de Cerveira. The complex has an oval layout with a circumference of approximately 260 metres and is protected by eight square towers. In some sections of the medieval wall, you can still walk along it. This allows you not only to view the historic fortification but also to explore it through its preserved structures.

The Museu das Pescas at the Aquamuseu do Rio Minho offers further insights into the region's history. It permanently displays old and more recent equipment used in commercial and recreational fishing, items related to artisanal fishing, boat models and black-and-white photographs. The Aquamuseu do Rio Minho is located in the Parque de Lazer do Castelinho. In the aquarium, visitors can learn about the most representative biotopes of the Rio Minho from its source to its mouth.

The Convento San Payo also forms part of the town's cultural profile. It was founded at the end of the 14th century by Franciscan friars from Galicia. After its restoration, the Convento San Payo became a museum and studio containing several hundred sculptures, drawings and paintings by José Rodrigues. Visits and workshops dedicated to introducing visitors to art and nature draw on its collections and the sculptor's works. At the Fórum Cultural de Cerveira, three rooms are also named after the biennale's founders, Jaime Isidoro, José Rodrigues and Henrique Silva. The Bienal Internacional de Arte de Cerveira is described as the oldest biennale of contemporary art on the Iberian Peninsula.

Riverbanks, Viewpoints and Trails

Those wishing to combine days of culture with physical activity will find several different options along the Minho. The Ecopista do Rio Minho stretches for 13 kilometres along the riverbank of the Concelho Vila Nova de Cerveira. It is integrated into the Natura 2000 network and the protected zone for waterbirds at the mouth of the Minho. The Ecopista Caminho do Rio offers another perspective: it runs along the left bank of the Minho and includes the river parishes of the Concelho Vila Nova de Cerveira. Along its route, it connects, among other places, the Parque de Lazer do Castelinho and Praia da Lenta.

The Marginal do Rio Minho – Doca de Recreio is approximately one kilometre long. Several sculptures are displayed along this riverside promenade. The Miradouro do Cervo is ideal for enjoying a wide view over the river landscape. It is located next to an iron sculpture by the sculptor José Rodrigues; from there, you can see large parts of the Minho from the crossing near Valença to the mouth near Caminha.

The Miradouro da Senhora da Encarnação has a picnic area with tables, benches and barbecue facilities, as well as a stone fountain. From the forecourt of the Capela e Miradouro da Senhora da Encarnação, the view extends over the Minho, the islands of Boega and Amores, the plain of Gondarém, the Ponte da Amizade and Galicia. Places like these give your trip different daily rhythms: a longer stretch along the river, a break with a view or a picnic at a designated site.

The Parque de Lazer do Castelinho combines sports and leisure facilities with educational elements relating to nature and water resources. The park includes a water park, an educational pond and the Aquamuseu do Rio Minho. It also has sports courts for several sports, a mini-golf course, a playground and an amusement park. Families travelling with children can combine a more active stay with nature and educational activities there without leaving cultural sightseeing out of their itinerary.

Crafts and History in the Surrounding Area

The Casa do Artesão promotes regional handicrafts and the artisans who create them. Its building is located in a converted former fish market at the Baluarte de Santa Cruz and is considered an example of 19th-century iron architecture. At weekends, visitors can see artisans there making cork products, ceramics and embroidered items.

The Atalaia de Lovelhe is also located near Vila Nova de Cerveira. This fortification in the Serra da Gávea was probably built during the Restoration War. In the same area, the Serra da Gávea contains around forty rock engravings divided into four groups, which are considered evidence of settlement during the Bronze Age. At the Moinhos da Gávea, you can learn about the maize cycle and traditional milling methods, particularly hydraulic systems and waterwheel mills. Praia Fluvial da Lenta allows for long walks along the interpretive footpath of the Ribeira Minho.
