The Igreja do Divino Salvador de Arão was restored after renovation work to preserve and enhance the building had been completed. It is regarded as a place of worship, community gathering and collective memory.

A particular religious practice is Lanço da Cruz. It is included in the National Inventory of Portugal's Intangible Cultural Heritage and is regarded as an identity-forming religious practice of the cross-border communities of the União de Freguesias de Valença, Cristelo Covo e Arão. Lanço da Cruz takes place every year on the Monday after Easter Sunday, the Pascoela day, on the River Minho and on its Portuguese and Spanish banks.
