Caminha: Culture, Serra d’Arga and Coast

Caminha combines impressive cultural monuments, the Serra d’Arga and varied landscapes along the coast and river. History in Towers, Churches and Fortresses

A prominent landmark is the Torre do Relógio. It is the only surviving tower of Caminha’s medieval town wall and houses the Núcleo Museológico do Centro Histórico de Caminha. The Igreja Matriz de Caminha, a National Monument since 1910, and the Igreja da Misericórdia de Caminha represent different historical periods: the Renaissance church was built in the 16th century.

There are also notable witnesses to the past outside the town centre. The Anta da Barrosa was classified as a National Monument in 1910. The Cividade de Âncora is a hillfort from the 2nd and 1st centuries BC and contains remains of a Roman settlement. Some of the archaeological finds can be viewed at the Museu Municipal de Caminha. The Capela de São Pedro de Varais contains fresco panels from the first half of the 16th century, which were restored in 1999. The Cruzeiro da Independência commemorates the Portuguese Wars of Independence.

River, Coast and Serra d’Arga

The landscape can be combined with different types of travel. Praia de Moledo is characterised by strong waves and offers good conditions for surfing and windsurfing. Praia de Caminha / Foz do Minho combines a sandy beach exposed to the open sea with calmer river waters that are suitable for children as well as sailing and windsurfing. Portinho de Vila Praia de Âncora has infrastructure for recreational boating.

The Serra d’Arga offers a different type of landscape. The Mosteiro de São João de Arga is located there and offers expansive views over the River Minho. The Centro de Interpretação da Serra d’Arga has interpretive trails, environmental education workshops and local products.

Bridges, Islands and Regional Specialities

The Ponte de Vilar de Mouros is classified as a National Monument, has three arches and a larger central arch. It continues to serve as a crossing and forms part of Estrada Nacional 301. Off the coast, the Forte da Ínsua stands on a rocky island about 200 metres opposite Praia de Moledo. The fort contains a Franciscan convent that was expanded in 1676. These structures provide additional historical points of reference for the trip, without all experiences having to be of the same kind.

The difference between the coast and the inland area of the Concelho de Caminha is also reflected in the cuisine. Cabrito à Serra d'Arga and Cabrito à S. Pedro de Varais are cited as typical inland dishes. The cuisine of the coastal parishes includes fresh fish from the sea and rivers. Those following the Caminho Português da Costa to Santiago de Compostela also experience Caminha as a stop on a pilgrimage route. The Romaria de São João d'Arga takes place every year at the end of August.

Active Days for Different Needs

Quinta de Chelo offers horseback rides through Vilar de Mouros for people with or without riding experience. Small children can have their first riding experience there.
