Trofa offers you a varied mix of culture, railway history, riverside landscapes and distinctive viewpoints. Those planning a trip with a range of experiences will find exhibition venues and churches here, as well as a linear path along the Rio Ave and a prominent mountain with Stations of the Cross. When searching for a holiday apartment, you can therefore choose the focus of your trip yourself: cultural discoveries, walks by the water, or historic and religious sites.

Culture between exhibitions, the railway station and churches

Casa da Cultura da Trofa provides the public with exhibition spaces, a library, a multimedia room, an open-air auditorium, gardens and a terrace. This makes it a versatile cultural venue for travellers who do not want to spend all their days outdoors. Another facet of the town’s history is presented by the exhibition at Antiga Estação da Trofa. It tells the story of the railway and the history of Trofa.

The former railway station itself is also part of the town’s history: The building was converted into a cultural space and returned to the Trofa community. Antiga Estação da Trofa was inaugurated in 1875. Those interested in religious architecture can also visit Igreja Paroquial de Santiago de Bougado, designed by Nicolau Nasoni. In Igreja Paroquial de São Martinho de Bougado, two pulpits facing one another and lavish Rococo carved altar furnishings stand out.

Riverside and paths through green spaces

Parque das Azenhas lies on the banks of the Rio Ave and is characterised by its natural landscape. A linear interpretive trail around five kilometres long runs through the park along the riverbank. If you would like to include a longer waterside route in your travel plans, this trail provides a specific option.

The Alameda da Estação has a different character. It was created during the redevelopment of the railway station area as a large pedestrian zone and forms an urban park covering more than 67,000 m². This means that in Trofa you can choose between a nature-oriented riverside experience and an expansive urban open space as different options for your daily itinerary.

Monte de São Gens de Cidai and traditional festivals

Monte de São Gens de Cidai offers views over Baixo Ave, parts of Trofa, Vila Nova de Famalicão and Santo Tirso, the sea, and the inland areas of Vila do Conde and Póvoa de Varzim. The mountain also features a staircase with Stations of the Cross. Capela de São Gens was rebuilt in the 20th century. Since 1951, festivities in honour of S. Gens have been held on the first weekend of September at Capela de São Gens on Monte de Cidai.

Capela de Nossa Senhora das Dores also combines history and living tradition. It was completely renovated in 1879 under the patronage of Comendador Manuel José Ribeiro and is the central element of the annual festival in its honour, held on the third Sunday in August.

Trofa as a starting point for planning your trip

Trofa is listed as a railway station on the Linha do Minho. Those who also wish to take travel arrangements and getting oriented locally into account when choosing accommodation can include this aspect in their planning. The deciding factor is whether cultural venues, the Rio Ave, larger open spaces or the view from Monte de São Gens de Cidai are most important to you. A holiday apartment in Trofa is especially suitable for your search if you do not want to limit your stay to a single attraction but instead want to discover different sides of the town.

For further guidance when selecting an area, you can also consider Guidões, Muro and São Martinho de Bougado.
