Estela combines a flat, low-lying landscape with coastline, agriculture, golf and a multifaceted local history. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday house for varied days away will find several points of interest here: the rural beach area of Estela-Barranha, the Estela Golf Club, paths along the Rio Alto and noteworthy religious buildings. This makes it possible to plan a trip around activities, landscapes and cultural discoveries, without every day having to look the same.

Beach Landscape and Campos Masseira

Estela-Barranha is a rural beach area. Elevated wooden boardwalks run across large sections of the sandy beach and help protect the dune vegetation.

A distinctive feature of the region is the Campos Masseira. These cultivated areas were created around 1880 through extensive excavation in the dunes, reaching two to three metres deep down to the groundwater table. Due to a natural physical phenomenon, desalinated water occurs there despite the proximity to the sea. This resulted in rectangular or square, trough-shaped areas. The pine tree also shapes the landscape of Estela. Those choosing accommodation for a stay focused on the coast and regional landscape will find an unusual contrast here between dunes, water and agricultural use.

Golf on the Atlantic Ocean

The Estela Golf Club has 18 holes and is 6,148 metres long. As a links golf course, it is located opposite the Atlantic Ocean in an environmentally protected area. There is direct, exclusive access to the beach. This combination makes the golf course a distinct focus for trip planning: a holiday apartment in Estela can be chosen as a base for days of golf and other coastal experiences, without this implying any particular distance between the accommodation and the course.

Churches, Boundary Stones and Local History

The Igreja de Santa Maria da Estela is a neoclassical religious building with a longitudinal floor plan. Its history extends beyond its present location: in 1800, it was moved from its former location near the Rio Alto stream; between 1982 and 1985, it was completely restored. Estela's historical record also includes 7 July 1140. On that day, Afonso Henriques transferred the Couto of Sancta Maria de Stella and Villam Menendi to the abbot of the monastery of S. Martinho de Tibães. It was the first known official document in which the monarch referred to himself as King of Portugal. Granite boundary stones engraved with “TIBÃES” are still present in Estela.

The Capela de S. Tomé also adds to the cultural character of the area. It features eclectic architecture; São Tomé and Nossa Senhora do Alívio are named as the chapel's festivities. In Vila Mendo, archaeological finds attest to Roman settlement associated with the castreja culture.

Routes and Practical Orientation

The Caminho a Santiago pela Costa reaches the Rio Alto in Estela; from there, the route continues to Esposende. This adds a notable route connection to the beach and golf. Traders are currently operating within the enclosure of the Feira Semanal da Estela. For your planning, you can therefore choose between a day on the coast, a round on the golf course, a focus on cultural history or a stay connected with the route along the Rio Alto.

For further orientation, you can also visit the pages on Terroso, Póvoa De Varzim and Navais. Which holiday apartment or holiday house suits your trip depends above all on whether you want to focus on the beach landscape, golf, history or a varied combination of these themes.
