Penalva Do Castelo combines cultural and historical discoveries with a varied landscape in the northern part of the Dão wine region, in the Castendo subregion. The Rio Dão runs for 21 kilometres through Penalva do Castelo; its slopes also provide the conditions for viticulture. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can therefore plan their stay around their preferred travel theme: culture, nature, regional products or a combination of everything.

Culture between manor house, monastery and sacred art

The two outstanding cultural and historical landmarks of Penalva do Castelo include Casa da Ínsua and Igreja da Misericórdia. Casa da Ínsua is a Baroque manor house commissioned by Luís de Albuquerque de Mello Pereira e Cáceres in the second half of the 18th century, around 1780. Its historic gardens cover 40 hectares and combine a French formal garden with an English garden. The Núcleo Museológico da Casa da Ínsua explores Portuguese-Brazilian relations in the 18th century, particularly through the work of Luís de Albuquerque de Mello Pereira e Cáceres. At the same time, it makes an important cultural heritage site accessible to the public.

Further historical facets are represented by the Mosteiro de Santo Sepulcro in Trancoselos, the first monastery built in Portugal by the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, and the Roman bridge in Castelo de Penalva over the Rio Dão. In Esmolfe, the prehistoric Anta do Penedo de Com and anthropomorphic graves are among the cultural heritage sites mentioned. The Núcleo Museológico da Misericórdia de Penalva do Castelo preserves unique works of sacred art and commemorates around four centuries of the Santa Casa’s work in the municipality.

A landscape for different day plans

The valley of the Rio Dão is considered an area of great biological diversity and offers direct contact with nature. The Açude dos Cantos lies by the river in a peaceful setting with diverse fauna and flora. The Trilho de Castendo offers a different perspective on the landscape: it begins in the centre of Penalva do Castelo next to the pillory and passes through oak forests, agricultural land, chestnut groves, vineyards and pine forests. This makes it possible to combine a stay featuring historic sights with a nature-oriented activity.

Mata da Senhora da Lurdes includes the Rio Côja, an artificial grotto carved into the rock and the Capela da Imaculada Conceição above it. Near Senhora da Ribeira there was a former hydroelectric facility, one of the first of its kind in Portugal. In addition to the former facility near Mata da Senhora da Lurdes, there is also a canal approximately 1,600 metres long, made entirely of granite. Its historical classification remains connected to its former use.

Wine, apple-growing tradition and local events

Regional cuisine and agriculture provide further focal points for a trip. In the slopes irrigated by the Rio Dão, climatic conditions and the nature of the soils make viticulture possible. The Maçã Bravo de Esmolfe is a particular speciality. The variety is said to have originated around 200 years ago in the village of Esmolfe in the municipality of Penalva do Castelo. Its flesh is soft, juicy and sweet, accompanied by an intense, distinctive aroma. Harvesting begins in the second half of September; when refrigerated, the apples can be stored for four to five months.

The Feira/Festa do Pastor e do Queijo takes place in February. At the beginning of October, it is followed by the Feira da Maçã Bravo de Esmolfe; on 11 November, Pindo celebrates the Festa da Castanha e do Vinho / São Martinho. The Encontro de Música Tradicional Portuguesa is part of the cultural programme in Castelo de Penalva. The Núcleo Museológico de Sangemil, which documents the bread-making cycle, is located on the second floor of Sangemil’s communal oven.

Choose the right base for your trip

When looking for accommodation, it is worth deciding in advance what kind of daily rhythm you want. Those wishing to combine gardens, a manor house, museums and sacred art can plan around a cultural programme. For nature-oriented days, the Rio Dão valley, the Açude dos Cantos and the Trilho de Castendo offer different impressions. Wine, apples and seasonal events provide further focal points. A holiday apartment in Penalva Do Castelo can therefore be chosen according to your personal mix of discoveries, landscapes and regional delicacies, without having to plan every day in the same way.
