Mata de Vilar is a 14-hectare forest where more than 70 animal species have been recorded. Five signposted hiking trails of varying difficulty offer different ways to experience the landscape. The 425-metre Trilho do Miradouro is linear, classified as easy and designed for a walking time of 15 minutes. If you prefer a longer route, the 1,638-metre Trilho do Medronheiro is a circular trail of medium difficulty with a stated duration of 45 minutes.
These two trails make it easier to plan different daily rhythms without committing to just one type of excursion. Important for your preparations: Mata de Vilar can currently be visited by groups and as part of organised events upon prior request. You should take this into account if the forest is to be a fixed part of your travel plans.
Romanesque heritage, towers and bridges
Lousada's cultural side ranges from medieval traces to engaging exhibitions. Mata de Grades preserves a wine press carved into the rock dating from the late Middle Ages. Torre de Vilar is an example of a fortified aristocratic residence, known as a “domus fortis”. Its construction is thought to have taken place between the second half of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th century. Ponte de Vilela offers another perspective on historic architecture, with its four round arches and technical and structural features from the Middle Ages. Ponte da Veiga is classified as a Gothic crossing dating from the first half of the 15th century.
Religious buildings also take visitors through different eras. The Igreja do Salvador de Aveleda was founded as early as the 11th or 12th century. The present-day building of the Igreja de Santa Maria de Meinedo dates from the 13th century and bears a stone inscription with the year 1262.
The Centro de Interpretação do Românico
The Centro de Interpretação do Românico makes the historical and cultural heritage accessible through interactive museographic experiences. The approximately 650-square-metre exhibition area is divided into six thematic rooms. On 16 March 2025, the centre was recognised as a “Museu de Território”. It is fully accessible to visitors with reduced mobility. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; the last admission for a guided tour is at 5 p.m.
The centre is connected by the Douro, Tâmega and Sousa routes towards Lousada and/or Felgueiras. This makes it possible to plan a cultural day more specifically than a stay focused on just one attraction. As part of a cultural tourism project, the Rota do Românico connects Lousada with 58 historic monuments and three interpretation centres in twelve municipalities in the valleys of the Sousa, Douro and Tâmega.
Nature watching and regional cuisine
The Parque Molinológico e Florestal do Sousa comprises seven mills, a hydraulic sawmill, a miller's house and three reservoirs. Migratory and resident birds can be observed at the reservoir. This creates an excursion destination that combines technological history with nature watching. Another local speciality is Basulaque, a dish characteristic of several municipalities in Lousada, particularly Meinedo. It is served as a starter on feast days and at family banquets.
