Óbidos combines a distinctive medieval town centre with art, history, a special hiking trail and its own culinary tradition. The castle and town centre complex is surrounded by high walls; its urban structure is defined by the Alcáçova, the entrances and the parade ground. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Óbidos can therefore choose between a focus on culture in the historic centre, experiencing nature and enjoying regional specialities when planning their trip.

Medieval Óbidos and Important Art

Óbidos is considered one of Portugal’s most distinctive and best-preserved medieval towns. Its historical character also includes its connection with the Casa das Rainhas: in the 13th century, King D. Dinis gave the town to his wife, D. Isabel. This history adds a courtly perspective to a tour of the walled town and castle area.

At the Museu Municipal de Óbidos, you will encounter religious art, devotional objects, paintings and sculptures from the 15th to the 18th century, as well as archaeological artefacts. The exhibitions place particular emphasis on the work of Josefa de Óbidos. The Igreja de Santa Maria is also noteworthy for art enthusiasts: it houses paintings by Baltazar Gomes Figueira and Josefa de Óbidos, while its walls are covered with 17th-century tiles.

Further sacred landmarks can be found at the Igreja da Misericórdia. Queen D. Leonor founded it in the 15th century; its interior features tilework from the important restoration of 1678. Outside the actual castle and town centre, the Santuário do Senhor da Pedra stands out for its unusual hexagonal exterior. The building was constructed between 1740 and 1747.

A Trail Through Vegetation and Limestone Landscape

For a more active day of travel, the Caminho de Santo Antão is an ideal activity in its own right. The route is 3.1 km long, has a difficulty rating of III and is considered somewhat difficult. Its paths pass through lush tunnels of native vegetation and Mediterranean woodland. Numerous stones and rock formations characterise the route and are typical of the area’s limestone elevations.

This allows you to shape your daily itinerary according to your interests: a stay can focus entirely on art and urban history or be supplemented with a route through the landscape. If you are travelling with different preferences, this clear choice between a cultural programme and a trail experience can help you plan your accommodation and the location you want in the town.

Plan Your Arrival and Choose Accommodation

For orientation when arriving, there are two reference points near the historic centre: Óbidos railway station is approximately 1 km away, while the bus stop serving Óbidos is about 100 metres away. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can therefore first decide whether the historic town centre, arrival by bus or an excursion destination outside the centre will determine your travel plans. This allows you to set your personal focus between culture, travelling by bus and experiencing the landscape.

In 2015, Óbidos received UNESCO’s designation as a City of Literature and was included in the Creative Cities Network. This aspect adds a literary dimension to the visible architecture. Ginjinha de Óbidos, a dark-red sour-cherry liqueur, is ideal for a pleasurable finale. It is offered either in a simple version or with fruit inside and can be enjoyed at several places in Óbidos, preferably in a small chocolate cup. The pilgrimage dedicated to Senhor da Pedra takes place on 28 May.
