Lagoa: Coast, Culture and Trails for Explorers

Lagoa combines an impressive Atlantic coast with nature trails, historic sites and a cuisine in which fish and traditional sweets play an important role. The area of Lagoa, located predominantly along the Atlantic coast, stretches for around 17 km; to the south, Lagoa borders the Atlantic Ocean.

Cliffs, Walkways and Coastal Trails

The coast of Lagoa is characterised by an almost continuous, deeply indented line of cliffs that usually drops steeply towards the ocean. This landscape is particularly striking at Algar Seco: here, ochre-coloured limestone rocks form a labyrinth that has been extensively shaped by rainwater and the effects of the sea. A walkway around 600 m long offers views of the sea as well as insights into the Mediterranean vegetation of the cliffs and the diversity of coastal fauna.

Two different coastal trails are available for longer walks. The Caminho dos Promontórios is 6 km long and runs between Praia do Molhe at the mouth of the Arade and Praia do Paraíso near Carvoeiro. Along the way, information boards explain coastal geology, lithology and geomorphology, marine ecosystems, coastal vegetation and the former human settlement of the coast. The Sete Vales Suspensos runs for 5.7 km through nature from Praia de Vale Centeanes to Praia da Marinha. At Praia da Marinha, you should allow time in your day's itinerary for the long staircase from the cliff-top viewpoint down to the beach.

Shorter or more specialised activities can also be included in your plans. At Praia do Carvoeiro, fishing boats take visitors on coastal excursions to nearby caves and algars. In the area around Praia de Benagil, boat trips make it possible to discover beaches that cannot be accessed by land. Those interested in the underwater world will find a diving site at Pedra da Torre in the Concelho Lagoa. Light boats are available for hire at Praia dos Caneiros.

Nature and History Inland

Sítio das Fontes showcases another side of Lagoa. The area includes marshes, wetlands, scrubland, a small temporary lagoon, abandoned agricultural land, as well as bodies of water and watercourses as representative elements of Mediterranean landscapes. Sítio das Fontes has traditionally been used for leisure activities and contact with nature. It also includes two historic watermills; the dating of at least one mill is documented in a book from the 15th century.

In Lagoa itself, the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz, Matriz de Lagoa, is worth a visit. It already existed before 1755, was renovated in the neoclassical style and consecrated in September 1814. The church also preserves an illuminated parchment leaf from a 13th-century songbook. The former São José monastery, now Centro Cultural – Convento de S. José, probably dates back to the 17th century. The cultural centre has two permanent exhibitions on the history of the building and preserves the Roda dos Expostos. Information and admission tickets are available at reception; a shop sells local handicrafts and local food products.

Flavours, Craftsmanship and Events

Traditional Lagoa cuisine includes grilled sardines, fish soup, cataplana, snail stew and oven-baked octopus. Conserveira Arade produces artisanal tinned fish made from mackerel, tuna, sardines and horse mackerel, as well as vegetables from the Algarve. Factory visits are possible subject to availability and prior appointment. In July, the annual Mostra do Doce Conventual at Convento de São José offers tastings of cakes, sweets, jams, honey and traditional handcrafted drinks such as medronho schnapps.

Dates may also be relevant when planning your trip: the Feira de Antiguidades e Velharias de Lagoa takes place on the fourth Sunday of every month, while FATACIL is held in the second half of August. The Auditório Carlos do Carmo expands the programme with music, dance, theatre, conferences, training courses and temporary exhibitions. It has 298 seats, including three adapted spaces for people with reduced mobility; information and admission tickets are available at reception.
