Proença-a-Nova combines extensive forest areas with cultivated fields, olive groves and cherry trees, whose blossom adds a special touch in spring. Those planning a trip with nature experiences, water, regional history and activities for different types of days will find many concrete possibilities here. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home, it is worth considering in advance whether hiking trails, river beaches, culture or family-friendly activities should be the main focus.

Forest Landscapes, Viewpoints and Trails

The first stage of the Rota da Cortiçada leads through the oldest streets of Proença-a-Nova and reaches the Cruzeiro at an altitude of 607 metres. From there, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Proença-a-Nova and the surrounding villages. The route thus combines historical orientation in the town with a viewpoint experience. Another option is the PR1 PNV “História na Paisagem”: the easy trail starts at Igreja das Moitas, is 9 kilometres long and is expected to take 3.5 hours. It also includes the Anta do Vale do Alvito, one of the trail’s three Mamoas.

For a shorter hike, the easy circular trail PR8 PNV – Caminho do Xisto de Figueira – Por Muros de Xisto is a good option. It is approximately 6.3 kilometres long. The trail follows the Ribeira de Figueira to an old olive press and a bridge. The PR2 PNV “Os Segredos do Vale do Almourão” also has information panels about the area’s history and biodiversity, as well as three viewpoints above the steep-sided Mourão Valley. The Miradouro do Almourão near Sobral Fernando looks out over the valley of the Rio Ocreza and the Portas de Almourão; elsewhere, you can see river terraces that formed as the river gradually cut its bed deeper.

River Beaches and Active Days

The TP2 Fróia starts at Praia Fluvial de Fróia. The easy hiking trail is 4.6 kilometres long and is expected to take one hour. Praia Fluvial da Fróia offers clear, crystal-clear water, restored mills, large sunbathing areas and a safe area for children. At Praia Fluvial do Malhadal, you can hire kayaks and pedal boats; there is also a floating pool with an area for children. Due to the presence of carp, barbel and boga, the location also offers good conditions for fishing activities.

Further water and nature experiences complete the picture: Praia da Aldeia Ruiva lies along a trail that follows the Ribeira da Isna through lush vegetation. Kites, eagles and black storks can be spotted along the way. Praia Fluvial da Cerejeira is located in a natural setting considered rich in fauna and flora, and offers good conditions for sport fishing. PR5 “Rota dos Recantos e Encantos” starts at Praia Fluvial de Alvito da Beira and follows old water channels towards Cova do Alvito.

Culture, Crafts and Regional History

At the Centro Ciência Viva da Floresta, the interactive science experience focused on the forest makes nature accessible through personal perception. The “Aromas da Floresta” module lets visitors smell forest aromas and guess their origin. Reservations are recommended for visits; without prior booking, access may be limited depending on available capacity. The centre states opening hours from Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 18:00, and closes at midday on weekends and public holidays.

The Museu Isilda Martins is divided into seven sections. They cover agriculture, forestry, domestic spaces and traditional crafts. Exhibits include everyday objects, clothing, agricultural equipment and other household items from the first half of the 20th century. Espaço Ribeiro Farinha displays 75 works of painting, ceramic panels and sculpture. Those interested in buildings and older traces can include the Roman bridge near São Pedro do Esteval, the 18th-century gilded woodcarving in the Igreja Matriz of Proença-a-Nova and the Pedra das Letras, with its drawings carved into the rock, in their personal selection. Pedreira is considered a typical village in Proença-a-Nova; the traditional schist mill with its very large millstones and the Moinho de Vento de Pergulho, described as worth seeing, provide further highlights.

Local traditions can also be discovered. The community oven in Figueira is used weekly to bake bread and broa, which are then supplied to the village shop. At Atelier da Aldeia, visitors can learn how to bake bread. Alongside hikes and excursions, such activities give a trip a craft and culinary dimension.

The Right Accommodation for Your Travel Plans

If you would like to start your day directly with a trail, consider the focus of your daily itinerary when searching for a holiday apartment or holiday home, and choose Proença-a-Nova as your search destination for a trip with forest trails, viewpoints and culture. For water-focused days, the river beaches and their different offerings may be the deciding factor. Families planning varied activities can consider the children’s area at Praia Fluvial da Fróia, the floating pool at Malhadal or the forest experience at the science centre. Those who prefer a more relaxed pace can combine short trails such as the TP2 Fróia with museums, mills and regional craft topics.
