Barroca combines impressive cultural heritage with a landscape along the Zêzere, where the river, riparian woodland, old mills and traces of mining come together. Particularly characteristic is the combination of regional architectural history, prehistoric rock engravings and different ways to discover the surroundings in your own way. Those planning a trip combining culture, nature and distinctive landscapes will find several clearly distinguishable highlights here.

Architecture and religious heritage in Barroca

An important cultural attraction is Casa Grande da Barroca. It was built in 1783 on the orders of Cónego Dr. Francisco Gonçalves and features architecture typical of Beira’s residential buildings in the 18th century. Casa Grande is also connected to the history of local administration: in the building, Fabião António issued official correspondence as administrator of the concelho.

Barroca’s religious heritage spans from the early 18th century to the 20th century. The religious tour includes the Capela de São Roque, the Alminha, the Capela de São Romão, the Antiga capela particular, the Igreja paroquial and the Capela de Nª Srª da Agonia. The Igreja Matriz de Barroca is also of interest as religious cultural heritage. This makes it possible to learn about the history of the village not only through a single building, but through several religious sites and different periods.

Rock Engravings and the Zêzere Landscape

Barroca is an Aldeia do Xisto. A particular cultural highlight is Poço do Caldeirão. The Centro de Interpretação da Arte Pré-Histórica do Poço do Caldeirão presents objects, texts, graphic reproductions of engravings and infographics. Along the visitor trail beside the Zêzere are three Palaeolithic horse representations engraved by pecking; all face to the right. For travel planning, this site is especially interesting if you would like to combine prehistoric art with a tangible experience of the landscape.

The surrounding area also tells of earlier uses and natural development. The old mills of Barroca were powered by the force of the river. Above the Barroca weir, the dense and diverse riparian woodland along the banks of the Zêzere provides habitat for otters. At the same time, the landscape is marked by spoil heaps created by ore extraction at the Minas da Panasqueira. Riverbanks, woodland and mining history therefore create a varied setting that clearly differs from a purely urban cultural trip.

Active and Relaxed Trip Options

The Zona de Lazer of Barroca is considered a place to relax by the river. The viewpoint at the Santuário da Sr.ª da Rocha offers a different experience: the uphill route invites visitors to stop and take photographs. Barroca is also home to the PR1 FND Caminho do Xisto da Barroca – Rota das gravuras rupestres hiking route. Meandros I [GR33 - GRZ: Canoagem] is a canoeing route. These different options make it easier to choose for days when you would like to switch between landscape, culture, activity and a more peaceful break.

Barroca as a Base for Travel Planning

When looking for a holiday apartment in Barroca, it is worth deciding on your preferred daily rhythm first: should the cultural heritage of Casa Grande, the churches and the prehistoric engravings be the main focus, or are the river landscape, viewpoint and designated activities more important? Barroca offers a manageable and thematically diverse setting for this. For access, the road from Fundão via the N238 covers 27 km to Barroca. This route is part of the practical planning, just as much as deciding which experiences will form the focus of your stay.
