Discover Caria: History, Caminos de Santiago and Landscapes
Accommodation in Caria
Caria lies on a hill at an altitude of 479 metres, between the São Sebastião and Santa Ana streams. The town combines a historic centre with visible traces of different periods and hiking trails through impressive landscapes. If you choose a holiday apartment or holiday home in Caria as your base, you can shape your stay according to your preferred pace: with historical discoveries, sections of the Caminos de Santiago or a combination of culture and activity.
Historic centre with traces of many eras
Caria’s historic centre includes houses dating from the 15th to the 18th century. It also bears traces of its importance to the Diocese of Guarda. The streets and houses preserve coats of arms, dated elements, reused architectural features and graffiti left by earlier populations. Cross-shaped marks on the doorframes of various houses are associated with an early Jewish presence in the town. These details make a walk particularly varied, as history is revealed not only in individual buildings but also on façades and at house entrances.
Notable buildings include the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, built in the 18th century. The Casa da Câmara is a Manueline building beside the area of the former Jewish settlement. The façade of the 16th-century Casa das Caras features three sculpted corbels in high relief. This historic setting is complemented by the Baroque Palacete dos Viscondes de Tinhalhas, the Neoclassical Palacete dos Viscondes de Caria from the late 19th century and the Casão with the Chapel of Santa Constança. The Solar Quevedo Pessanha is a Baroque manor house built in the 18th century.
Museums, early history and local tradition
For a deeper exploration of the town, Casa da Roda offers a small exhibition on the subject of Casa da Roda, with documents and objects. The building probably dates from 1784. The Casa Etnográfica de Caria presents a traditional house from the Beira region. The Museu do Território was opened in the Casa da Torre, a bishops’ palace of the Bishops of Guarda built on the remains of Caria Castle, and contains archaeological finds.
Caria also preserves traces of its more distant past. Castro de S. Geraldo is among the documented traces of human presence since antiquity. The Anta de Caria is mentioned in connection with the oldest traces of human presence in the region, dating back to the Late Neolithic or Chalcolithic period. You can experience a local tradition on 2 December, when Santa Bebiana is celebrated. The festivities include a procession carrying the images of Santa Bebiana and São Martinho.
Caminos de Santiago and paths through the landscape
Caria is also a destination for travellers who would like to include historic routes in their plans. The Via da Estrela route to Santiago de Compostela reaches Caria via Lage do Freixo. In the town, it connects with the Via Portugal Nascente. Both Caminos de Santiago then continue to Belmonte. The routes through Caria—the Via da Estrela and the Via Portugal Nascente—are marked with traditional yellow arrows. Caria also has hiking trails through impressive landscapes. The town is additionally home to the Piscina Municipal de Caria, its municipal swimming pool.
This allows you to shape your stay in different ways: you can focus on the historic centre and its buildings, follow a section of the Caminos de Santiago or combine hikes with cultural destinations. When choosing accommodation, it makes sense to first determine this personal focus rather than basing your travel plans solely on a single building.
