Mirandela between Tua Trails, Castle and Olive Oil Culture

Mirandela combines its location on the banks of the Tua River with hiking trails, castle history, museums and a distinctive culinary tradition. It belongs to Mirandela’s municipal hiking trail network, which has been officially approved by the Federação de Campismo e Montanhismo de Portugal. Those who would like to include a linear route ending in Mirandela in their travel plans can take this trail’s length and course into account.

Another linear option is the Trilho de Vale de Lobo, measuring 8.6 kilometres from Vale de Lobo to Mirandela. The Trilho Entre Rios is, by contrast, a 7.3-kilometre circular hiking trail that starts and ends at Parque de Campismo Três Rios Maravilha. These differences help you organise your day according to the route format and starting and/or endpoint, without combining different hiking experiences into a single trail.

The landscape along the Trilho do Tua also contributes to the character of the hike: poplars, alders and willows grow predominantly by the water. Farther from the watercourse, extensive landscapes of olive trees, cork oaks and pines shape the scenery. For families with different ideas about their holiday, this combination provides a good opportunity to consciously alternate active days with more relaxed sightseeing.

Castle, museums and an industrial past

Castelo de Mirandela was built at the end of the 13th century on the hill of S. Miguel above the river, commissioned by King D. Dinis. The surviving features include the Porta de Santo António and several sections of the former town wall. Since 1955, Castelo de Mirandela has been classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público. The Centro Cultural Municipal houses the Museu Armindo Teixeira Lopes, with an extensive and diverse collection of sculptures, paintings, serigraphs and drawings. At the Museu da Oliveira e do Azeite, a more than 100-year-old hydraulic olive oil press, which is still operational, takes centre stage. The museum is located in the former facilities of the Moagem Mirandelense, which represent almost a piece of industrial archaeology.

The Linha do Tua also forms part of the historical context: the section between the Foz do Tua and Mirandela railway stations was inaugurated on 27 September 1887. For a culturally interested stay, the castle, museums and railway history thus offer several distinct themes.

Alheira, olive oil and festivals throughout the year

Alheira de Mirandela is a traditional smoked sausage made from pork and pork fat, poultry such as chicken and/or turkey, wheat bread, olive oil and lard. It is seasoned with salt, garlic and sweet and/or hot paprika. Four gastronomic festivals take place in the municipality of Mirandela throughout the year: the Festival de Sabores do Azeite Novo, the Festival Gastronómico da Alheira de Mirandela, the Festival Gastronómico do Cabrito DOP and the Festival Gastronómico da Caça. The Festival Gastronómico da Alheira takes place in March; participating restaurants offer special menus featuring Alheira.

The Festas em honra de Nossa Senhora do Amparo take place at the end of July. The programme includes a procession, a torchlight procession and fireworks.
