Discover Podence: Caretos, Culture and Trails
Podence combines an impressive local tradition with cultural discoveries and trails through the surroundings of the Azibo Reservoir. At its heart is the Entrudo Chocalheiro: during their processions through the village, the masked Caretos roam the streets. Their main task is to tease women with their bells. The ritual is recognised as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and gives a trip to Podence a distinctive cultural focus.
Discover the World of the Caretos
The Entrudo Chocalheiro is characterised by more than its striking masks and bells. Children also take part in the ritual as “facanitos”, meaning apprentices of the Caretos. Those travelling with children will find this a tangible way to engage with a tradition carried on by different generations. Participation is part of the ritual itself; it should therefore be treated as a special occasion when planning your trip.
At the Casa do Careto, a permanent exhibition displays Careto costumes, bells, masks and other items of clothing. A visit to the Museu do Careto also includes a screening of a documentary film about this tradition. This allows you to shape your stay in Podence in different ways: you can discover the visible elements of the Caretos while also exploring their cultural background.
Another cultural landmark is the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Purificação. It was built in the final years of the 17th century. Together with the permanent exhibition at the Casa do Careto, the church adds a historical dimension to Podence, fitting well into a more relaxed day of sightseeing.
On Foot Between the Village and the Azibo Reservoir
For active days, the Trilho dos Caretos de Podence is available in several described variants. The Short Route begins at an information board in the village of Podence, near the Casa do Careto, and ends at Praia da Ribeira, one of the two river beaches on the Azibo Reservoir. This route links the starting point in the village with a clearly named destination by the water.
There is also a circular version of the Trilho dos Caretos, approximately 8.5 km long and rated as low difficulty. Take this approximate distance into account when planning your day. This allows you to decide in advance whether to combine the cultural visit with a hike or focus on the exhibitions, the village and regional cuisine.
Regional Cuisine and Further Discoveries
At the Casa do Careto, the regional tavern “O Careto” serves dishes from Trás-os-Montes. The menu includes, among other things, Posta, Rodeão and various cured meats. This makes the tavern a suitable stop if you want to experience the area not only through its sights but also through its regional cuisine.
The Casa do Careto shop also offers the opportunity to take part in a “Ser Careto” experience. In Podence, you can also see several graffiti works dedicated to the tradition of the Caretos de Podence. As a result, the theme can be encountered not only in exhibitions and during the ritual, but also in the village streetscape.
Podence as a Base for Finding Your Accommodation
If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday house, choose your location according to the pace of travel you want. If your focus is on Careto tradition and culture, the Casa do Careto, the Museu do Careto, the church and the graffiti are important reference points for your planning. If you would like to include some activity, also take the Short Route and the approximately 8.5 km circular variant into account. When travelling with children, the role of the “facanitos” in the Entrudo Chocalheiro may also be a key consideration.
This keeps Podence as an accommodation-search area closely connected to the experiences you actually want to include in your trip. If you would like to compare other places, you can also visit the pages for Morais, Arcas, Bornes and Santa Combinha.
