Passó can be explored through several different themes: the Trilho do Fojo do Lobo runs through Passô and combines mountain views with waterfalls, irrigation channels and old mills. There is also a local legend about the name Passô and the Capela de Santa Ana do Monte on a mountain above the Vale do Homem. For your trip, you can weigh up a short hike, traces of cultural history and a religious landmark, rather than reducing Passó to just one type of outing.

Hiking and local tradition

Described in 2019, the Trilho do Fojo do Lobo is a short hiking trail with a focus on tourism and culture. Its highlights include mountain views, a historic wolf trap, waterfalls, irrigation channels, watermills and old mills. This variety gives the trail more than one point of interest: landscape, water and former ways of using the land sit side by side. If you are interested in history and culture, the wolf trap is a distinctive feature; if you prefer taking in the scenery, the mountain views and waterfalls offer other points of interest. This combination makes the trail a hiking option for travellers who value cultural and historical details as well as the landscape.

A local legend explains the name Passô with the repeated question, “A senhora passou por aqui?”—in English, “Did the lady pass by here?” Rather than observing the landscape, this story takes centre stage and offers a different way to connect with the place. You can therefore see the hiking trail and this local tradition as different reasons to explore Passó: one through the sights along a route, the other through the story behind the name.

The Capela de Santa Ana do Monte

The Capela de Santa Ana do Monte offers a different landscape setting: it stands on a mountain above the Vale do Homem. The route to the chapel involves a long, steep climb. This differs considerably from the Trilho do Fojo do Lobo, which is described as short; if you are comparing routes, take the distance and elevation gain into account separately when planning. There is a recreational area near the chapel with picnic tables in the shade of the trees. If you are planning to use the tables for a break, check that they are currently available before your visit.

A procession in honour of Saint Ana and Saint Joaquim is also part of the chapel’s history: it began at the parish church of Passô and went to the Capela de Santa Ana do Monte. The route was about two kilometres long and included a long, steep climb; at the destination, the procession ended with a solemn Eucharistic celebration. Unlike the Trilho, the focus here is not on the scenery and mills, but on the religious occasion and the route to the chapel.

A dated rally connection

The RallySpirit route offers another specific, time-limited connection: in the 2023 edition, it passed the Capela de Santa Ana in Paçô. The special stage in that edition was 11.9 kilometres long. This rally connection adds a sporting interest to the hiking and cultural themes and is specifically associated with RallySpirit 2023.

When choosing a holiday rental in Passó, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your trip: would you like to explore the highlights of the short Trilho do Fojo do Lobo, plan the steep climb to the chapel, or focus mainly on the local legend and the procession? Compare the location of any holiday rental you are considering with your own daily itinerary, so your accommodation choice suits the experiences you actually want to prioritise.
