Póvoa De Lanhoso: Hiking, Culture and River Landscapes

Póvoa de Lanhoso combines impressive landscapes with an unusually rich history. The town’s diverse facets include castles, prehistoric sites, religious buildings, traditional goldsmithing and trails through the Serra do Carvalho. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home as a base for varied days away will find inspiration here for active pursuits as well as cultural discoveries and relaxing stays by the water.

Hiking between mountains, valleys and granite

The GR 117 – Via Romana XVII crosses the Serra do Carvalho and offers views over the valley of the River Cávado and the Serra do Gerês. This is an interesting choice for planning your trip if historic routes and expansive landscapes are to go hand in hand. The PR1 – Maria da Fonte begins in Parque do Pontido and leads to the S. Brás Chapel, one of the oldest chapels in the municipality of Póvoa de Lanhoso, which stands out for its unusual design.

The PR2 – Monte do Merouço offers a different experience. Along a route of approximately 150 metres, it crosses numerous rock fissures between large granite monoliths. The trail also leads to the Miradouro da Pedra Bolideira, with views of the Serras do Carvalho, São Mamede and Cabreira, as well as the distinctive granite massif of Gerês. The PR3 – Ribeiro Queimado runs through a riverside landscape along the River Ave to the Parque de Lazer do Pontão, whose clear water invites you to enjoy refreshing swims. This allows you to combine hiking, scenic viewpoints and water-based experiences according to your interests.

Castles, sanctuaries and places of remembrance

Castelo de Lanhoso is classified as a national monument and offers extensive views over the valleys of the River Ave and the River Cávado. Castro de Lanhoso represents a much older era: on the eastern side of Monte de Lanhoso, a fortified hilltop settlement of an Iron Age castrejo community developed in the 1st millennium BC. Mamoa do Madorro also reaches far back into history. It dates from approximately the 4th millennium BC and is the largest known mamoa in the municipality of Póvoa de Lanhoso to date.

The Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Porto de Ave comprises a church, a museum of popular sacred art, a Way of the Cross with chapels depicting episodes from the life of the Virgin Mary, and several buildings originally constructed to support pilgrims. A royal charter issued on 14 April 1874 elevated it to the status of Royal Sanctuary. Other notable places include the Santuário Rupestre de Garfe, with three basins carved out of a granite outcrop and an access path made visible through wear, as well as the almost isolated Igreja de Santa Maria de Verim.

Goldsmithing, theatre and regional traditions

At the Sala de Interpretação da Filigrana, you can learn about the goldsmithing tradition associated with the craftspeople of Travassos and Sobradelo da Goma. An exhibition tour presents the tools and stages involved in traditional filigree production. The Museu do Ouro de Travassos complements this theme with workshop equipment, goldsmithing tools, silver objects, gold pieces and archaeological finds, including a Copper Age diadem and a Roman earring. In Travassos, the Day of Santo Elói, the patron saint of goldsmiths, is also celebrated on the first Sunday in December.

The Theatro-Club has a programme focused primarily on theatrical performances and hosted the last ten editions of the National Amateur Theatre Festival, now called Concurso Nacional de Teatro. The Maria da Fonte Revolution began in the spring of 1846 in the parish of Fontarcada and was led by hundreds of women from the municipality of Póvoa de Lanhoso. The Benedictine monastery of Divino Salvador de Fontarcada was founded at the end of the 11th or beginning of the 12th century; the present-day church probably dates from the middle of the 13th century.

Water, wine country and suitable accommodation

Albufeira das Andorinhas is equipped for a wide variety of water sports activities. At Praia fluvial de Verim on the River Cávado, there is a picnic area as well as an amphibious chair for people with reduced mobility. The Centro de Interpretação do Carvalho de Calvos offers environmental education activities for children, adults and older people; tastings of organic products are available at Bar Biológico. Carvalho de Calvos is a pedunculate oak (Quercus robur) that has been classified as a tree of public interest since 22 August 1997.

When choosing your accommodation, it is therefore worth considering the type of trip you want: hiking trails and viewpoints favour an actively planned journey, while museums, sanctuaries, river landscapes and regional traditions also make culturally oriented days possible. Póvoa de Lanhoso is located in the demarcated wine region of Vinhos Verdes. From Porto, you can reach the town via the A3 motorway, then the EN103 national road and finally the EN205 national road.
