São Pedro combines impressive landscapes with hiking trails and a multifaceted religious culture. Those looking for a holiday apartment in São Pedro can plan their stay according to their own interests: highlights include trails along the north coast of Santa Maria, a distinctive geosite, chapels and traditional festivals.

Landscapes and trails for active exploration

One outstanding natural destination is Baía do Raposo. It lies within the Área de Paisagem Protegida do Barreiro da Faneca and is classified as a geosite of the Açores Geoparque Mundial da UNESCO. The Bananeiras–Vila do Porto stage of the Grande Rota reaches Baía do Raposo. There you will find the ruins of two watermills, the levada that supplied them and a wine press from the local wine-growing culture.

Several clearly described routes are available when planning different days of hiking. The Norte–Bananeiras stage is 16.5 kilometres long and leads to the village of Bananeiras in the Freguesia São Pedro. The following stage 4 of the Grande Rota connects Bananeiras with Vila do Porto over 22.5 kilometres. Those who prefer a linear route can take Costa Norte PR01SMA, a trail connecting Bananeiras with the historic village of Anjos along the north coast of Santa Maria.

Native and endemic plants grow along the Ribeira do Engenho section, including Picconia azorica, Morella faya and Pericallis malvifolia. Several bird species are also frequently seen or heard on Costa Norte PR01SMA. The trail begins at Feteiras de São Pedro and can be reached from Vila do Porto via the regional road towards São Pedro. Another perspective is offered by the third stage of the Grande Rota Santa Maria: it passes through a wooded area with a viewpoint overlooking the village of São Pedro.

Chapels, Church and Regional Traditions

São Pedro is also suitable for travel planning with a cultural focus. The Ermida de Nossa Senhora de Fátima is a chapel built in the 20th century on a hill at an altitude of 245 metres, offering unobstructed views. Access is via a staircase with 150 steps and 10 landings. These symbolise the beads of the rosary and the mysteries of the rosary. According to tradition, after the Capelinha das Aparições in Cova da Iria, the chapel was the first outside Leiria to be built in honour of Nossa Senhora de Fátima.

The Igreja Paroquial de São Pedro, also known as Igreja de São Pedro e Treatro, was rebuilt in the second half of the 18th century on the site of a 16th-century church. Its origins lay in a 15th-century chapel. The church stands on a raised platform; the churchyard, enclosed by a wall, is accessed from the front via a broad staircase. The Treatro next to the church is used for holding the traditional Império.

Further religious buildings add to the character of the village. The Ermida de Nossa Senhora do Pilar was built in the 18th century and rebuilt in the 19th century. Next to it are an Império or Treatro and the associated copeira. The Ermida de Nossa Senhora de Monserrate probably has foundations dating from the 16th century; its present structure was built in the 18th century according to a Mannerist design and rebuilt at the end of the 20th or beginning of the 21st century. In Paúl de Cima, it is located in a picturesque spot hidden by trees and offers panoramic views over the Freguesia Vila do Porto.

Practical Highlights for Planning Your Trip

Smaller monuments also provide distinctive points of interest. Fonte São José is a fountain built in the 18th century with formal features of naïve Baroque. Beneath its central arch is a cartouche bearing the years “1722” and “1915”. The Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Saúde was rebuilt in 1858 at a different location from the original chapel and stands on a raised platform next to an intersection of several roads.

Between June and August, the Festas de São Pedro include celebrated masses and processions in honour of the patron saint of the Freguesia São Pedro. Barreiro da Faneca is known as the “Red Desert” of the Azores and can be reached by car via the roads through Paúl or Piquinhos in the Freguesia São Pedro.
