Terra Alta combines an impressive coastal landscape with viewpoints, forest trails and traces of a rural past. Anyone looking for accommodation for a stay focused on nature experiences can choose between panoramic views, a downhill route and summer moments by the sea, allowing them to set different priorities here.

Protected Area and Island Views

The 112-hectare Terra Alta protected area forms a coastal strip between the seashore and the edge of the cliffs. It stretches from Porto da Baixa (Ribeirinha) to Ribeira das Gramelas (Santo Amaro). The area's international recognition is also noteworthy for nature enthusiasts: BirdLife International has recognised it as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA).

The Terra Alta viewpoint is located at an altitude of 415 metres at the highest point of the sea cliff and is incorporated into the Terra Alta protected area. From there, panoramic views extend over São Jorge Island and the Pico–São Jorge Channel. In favourable weather conditions, Terceira Island and Mount Pico can also be seen. This view makes the viewpoint a clear point of reference for anyone who wants to plan their trip around landscape and wide-open vistas.

Trails with Different Impressions

The Caminho das Voltas starts at the Miradouro da Terra Alta and ends in the centre of Santo Amaro. The route leads downhill through a forest in which Incenso (Pittosporum undulatum) is the predominant species. The trail also includes remains of vineyard walls and small bridges made of hewn stone. As a result, this route focuses not only on natural scenery but also on visible traces of the area's former use.

The Caminho das Voltas also offers a detour to Baía do Canto. This small recreational area by the sea is surrounded by local wine cellars. The Canto section is used for swimming and picnics in summer. If you are travelling with different interests, you can therefore plan around the desired combination of trail experience, scenery and time by the sea.

Another option is the Canadas da Ribeirinha route. It follows the Caminho da Atalhada, where old tracks left by ox carts are visible in the ground. A detour takes you to the Alto dos Cedros viewpoint overlooking São Jorge. The two routes therefore offer different highlights: one focuses on historical traces and an additional viewpoint, while the other features a forest trail with stone bridges, vineyard walls and Baía do Canto.

Choose Accommodation According to Your Travel Plans

When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Terra Alta, it is worth deciding first which experiences you want. Should the stay focus mainly on views and the protected area, on a route through forest and cultivated landscape, or on summer time by the sea? For a trip involving several generations or different age groups, this classification helps take shared interests into account at an early stage without limiting the stay to a single programme.

A Traditional Story

Alongside the landscape and trails, a local legend is also part of Terra Alta's narrative character. It tells of a light that once travelled through Terra Alta and was seen by many residents. As a traditional story, it complements the visible natural and cultural experiences with a distinctive local tale.
