Discover Vila do Corvo: Culture, Trails and Island History
Vila do Corvo combines local history, distinctive cultural experiences and trails through a striking landscape. On the Circuito Interpretativo da Vila, you explore the streets and Canadas of Vila do Corvo while hearing residents’ stories about their community. This means that discovery begins not only with individual sights, but also with the structure of the village and the stories connected to it.
Local History and Cultural Heritage
Casa do Tempo is a building open to visitors belonging to the Ecomuseu do Corvo in the old centre of Vila do Corvo. It is housed in a restored 17th- or 18th-century building whose original design has been preserved. The multimedia presentation focuses on the history and traditions of Corvo. It includes a presentation of the island, a geological and historical timeline, a photo archive, eyewitness accounts, genealogical content and a documentary film.
Casa da Memória currently houses the permanent exhibition “Ilha do Corvo – Marcas de um Passado”. Its objects come from areas such as weaving, agriculture, everyday life, carpentry and furniture making. The exhibition preserves important aspects of the history and cultural memory of the Corvo community. Those who enjoy discovering a place through objects, crafts and ways of life will find a particularly tangible insight here.
Atafona do Lourenço also tells of earlier forms of everyday life. It is the only surviving one of the five animal-powered mills that once existed on Corvo. The rustic grain mill was powered by an animal, usually an ox. This historical context should be retained when planning a trip: the mill represents an earlier use and complements today’s exhibitions with a vivid piece of island history.
Another visitor facility belonging to the Ecomuseu do Corvo is the Pavilhão Multiusos. It hosts exhibitions, cinema screenings, theatre, lectures, congresses, seminars, colloquia, music events, dance and other sociocultural events. In addition to its historic houses, Vila do Corvo therefore also offers a venue for different forms of cultural exchange.
Hiking Trail, Viewpoint and Special Visits
For a trip with a stronger focus on the landscape, the Cara do Índio PR01COR hiking trail is a notable starting point. It connects the geosites of Caldeirão and Vila do Corvo and runs through parts of the Costa e Caldeirão do Corvo protected area. When planning your trip, bear in mind that this trail is a separate route with clearly defined starting and ending points, rather than treating it as the same as the streets and Canadas within the village.
Casa da Vegia helps visitors find their bearings in the village. It contains a true-to-scale model of the Old Town Centre of Vila do Corvo, introducing visitors to its various public areas. Casa da Vegia also offers a first view of the Old Town Centre from the cliff at Porto da Casa, in a public area. Porto da Casa is currently the only harbour on the island used for commercial and recreational purposes.
Those interested in observing nature can consider visiting the Centro de Reabilitação de Aves Selvagens do Corvo. Guided tours of the facilities are offered by prior appointment. Visitors may be able to observe birds that are undergoing rehabilitation at that time. Making an appointment is therefore an important part of preparing for this visit.
The Church of Nossa Senhora dos Milagres also adds a cultural highlight: it houses a valuable Flemish sculpture from the beginning of the 16th century. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can therefore first consider which combination should shape your stay: local history and exhibitions, a trail between Vila do Corvo and Caldeirão, an arranged visit to the bird rehabilitation centre, or exploring the island’s religious and craft heritage. The available attractions allow for a variety of daily itineraries without requiring a set travel programme.
