The castle, church and a red hiking trail shape Pęzino’s cultural and active attractions. The castle brings together clearly identifiable architectural phases from the Early Gothic to the Neo-Gothic period; the late Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary adds its own architectural touch. In addition, the Hetman Stefan Czarniecki Trail runs from Stargard to Recz and passes through Pęzino. When looking for a holiday apartment in Pęzino, you can consider whether you would like to focus primarily on architectural history or on a longer hiking route.

Castle and Church: Different Architectural Histories

Pęzino Castle was originally built by the Knights Hospitaller around the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. Its clearly identifiable architectural phases range from the Early and Late Gothic periods through the Late Renaissance to the Neo-Gothic period. The castle is therefore an attraction for anyone interested not just in a single era, but in a variety of architectural styles.

The late Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary dates from the mid-16th century and was built of fieldstone and brick. Compared with the castle, its architectural focus is on the Late Gothic period, while the castle shows several distinct building phases. In Pęzino, then, two different approaches to architectural history sit side by side: a castle with multiple architectural phases and a church with its own distinctive period and construction.

The Red Hiking Trail Through Pęzino

The red Hetman Stefan Czarniecki Hiking Trail is 62.5 kilometres long. It runs from Stargard to Recz and passes through Pęzino along the way. This length refers to the entire route; it is not the length of a section in Pęzino. When planning your trip, it is therefore helpful to distinguish between the long connection between the two cities and the architectural attractions in Pęzino. This will help you decide whether the hiking route or the area’s architectural history should play a bigger part in your stay.

Stargard: Architecture, Museum and Trails

In Stargard, the Church of St. Mary and the medieval town walls were recognised as a Monument of History by a regulation issued by the President of the Republic of Poland on 17 September 2010. The town walls are among the few examples of medieval town fortifications in West Pomerania that have been preserved almost along their entire length, complete with defensive gates and bastions. The fortifications are therefore a distinct architectural highlight in Stargard.

A museum exhibition in Stargard presents the city’s history from its founding in the 13th century to the beginning of the 18th century. The “In the Land of the Griffin” Historical Festival is also considered an event for families, history enthusiasts and anyone looking to spend an active weekend in June.

For a comparison of the trails, Stargard offers a different scale from the 62.5-kilometre route to Recz: the “Stargard – Jewel of Pomerania” circular trail runs through the Old Town and is about 3 kilometres long. This gives you a choice between a shorter loop through Stargard’s Old Town and a considerably longer route that passes through Pęzino.
