Town history reflected in the townscape

The medieval town layout has been preserved to this day. The townscape is characterised by half-timbered houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. Their wooden elements are designed in the Biedermeier and Art Nouveau styles. St. Clare’s Church is located in the north-western part of the town. It is designed as a three-aisled, four-bay hall in the Late Gothic style; its tower is in the Neo-Gothic style. The Szlak Olbrzymów and its landscape

The Szlak Olbrzymów is four kilometres long. North of Dobra, it takes in the Dobrzenica River valley, valley slopes with meadows and forests, and the Czapla Szyja peninsula. Along the trail are habitats for waterfowl and notable old trees. The meadows, forest, river valley and peninsula together form a varied landscape where nature watching and historic discoveries go hand in hand.

Near Dobra, the Czapla Szyja peninsula is the trail’s main attraction. Remains of a 6th-century pile-dwelling settlement were found there. The Grodzisko Żurawi Ostrów is also located on the peninsula and is an important point on the Szlak Olbrzymów. In the Middle Ages, a 170-metre-long pile bridge stood there. It connected the peninsula to a hill on the opposite bank. The exposed wooden structures are currently being investigated archaeologically. Alongside its landscape, these historic details give the trail a clear archaeological focus.

Lake Leśne is a 1.7-hectare viewpoint on the Szlak Olbrzymów and also a refuge for wetland birds. Visitors particularly interested in the landscape and birdlife will find a different focus here than at the town’s buildings.
