The 42.5-kilometre “Rezerwat Siedem Wysp” cycling route runs from Węgorzewo via Perły, Rudziszki, Pasternak and Zielony Ostrów, then back to Węgorzewo. Before setting out, you should contact the reserve ranger and the Border Guard. A shorter circular route is the 30.7-kilometre “Leśny Szlak Sapiny”: it runs from Węgorzewo via Stręgiel, Stręgielek and Ogonki, then back to the starting point.

At 103 kilometres, the “Duża Pętla Mamr” is the longest of the routes described here. It starts and ends in Węgorzewo and passes, among other places, through Trygort, Mamerki, Sztynort, Giżycko and Ogonki. Its route includes both easier paved roads and difficult paths; check local conditions before setting off. The 44.4-kilometre off-road cycling route via Kal, Kalskie Nowiny and Trygort also starts and ends in Węgorzewo. Because of its grassy terrain, it is considered quite demanding. The 53-kilometre “Szlakiem Gór” route passes through Czerwony Dwór, Pawłowo, Olszewo, Góry, Łęgwarowo, Pasternak, Wesołowo, Nowa Guja, Guja, Różewiec, Węgielsztyn and Trygort; it includes several steep climbs and descents.

So distance is not the only factor to consider when choosing a route. The routes via Kal and Kalskie Nowiny and “Szlakiem Gór” specifically involve challenging terrain or climbs and descents. The “Duża Pętla Mamr” combines easier paved sections with difficult paths. When planning your holiday days, you can take these details into account alongside each route’s length, rather than treating all the routes as equivalent cycling tours.

The Sapina, Masurian architecture and history

There is also a different perspective on the water: within the municipality, the Sapina is a canoeing and sailing route. The cemetery is dedicated to soldiers who fell in the First World War; the graves of 344 German and 234 Russian soldiers are located there.
