Church and Memorial Sites

The church in Trelkowo dates from 1757 and is surrounded by a stone wall. It has a tower and two annexes. Its construction date places the church in the mid-18th century. The stone wall describes its boundary, while the tower and annexes identify further parts of the building; the outer enclosure and the building’s layout are thus presented side by side. The church is therefore a clearly dated building with several specifically named features.

Next to the church stands a monument in the form of an open book, commemorating the villagers who fell in the First World War. There is also a pastor’s grave with a cast-iron cross by the church porch. The two memorials point to different subjects: the book commemorates villagers, while the grave commemorates an individual pastor. In addition, there is a former Protestant cemetery with preserved gravestones and monuments. The cemetery broadens the focus from an individual grave to a place with several surviving memorials. Its former Protestant character is also part of the place’s history.

The Baptist chapel in Trelkowo dates from 1928–1929 and is currently unused. Compared with the church’s construction date, the chapel was built more than 170 years later. The two dates therefore mark distinctly different building periods in the town’s religious architecture. The dates place the religious buildings in time, while the First World War provides the historical context for the book monument; the buildings’ history and the act of remembrance thus offer two distinct temporal perspectives.

The “Ewita” Horse-Riding Trail

Another point of interest is the “Ewita” horse-riding trail, which runs through Trelkowo. Its route passes through Sasek Mały, Szymanki, Ciemna Dąbrowa, Piecuchy, Wały, Gawrzyjałki, Wyżegi, Jerominy, Chochół, Świętajno, Marksoby, Orżyny, Jabłonka, Trelkowo, Kobylocha, Piece, Sawica, Witówko and Sasek. In the order listed, Trelkowo comes after Jabłonka and before Kobylocha; Sasek Mały begins the sequence, and Sasek ends it. Trelkowo is therefore one section of the route, not its endpoint.
