Church history of the parish of St. Monica

The Roman Catholic parish of St. Monica was established in Kajkowo on 1 July 2000. On 26 September 2010, Archbishop Wojciech Ziemba, Metropolitan of Warmia, consecrated the altar and the church of St. Monica in Kajkowo.

Both dates belong to the more recent church history of the village, but they mark different events: the founding concerns the parish, while the later consecration concerns the altar and church. The specific dates make it easy to distinguish this sequence. This also offers a way to introduce children to two different chapters of religious history: the establishment of a parish and the consecration of its church.

A monument commemorating independence

On 11 November 2010, a monument in the form of a boulder was erected in Plac Mariacki, behind the Lourdes Chapel in Kajkowo. Its inscription refers to the 100th anniversary of Poland regaining its independence. The location, form and occasion for remembrance are clearly specified: a boulder bearing an inscription, erected in the square behind the chapel.

The monument focuses on something different from the history of St. Monica. Here, the subject is the commemoration of Polish independence; there, it is the establishment of a parish and the consecration of the altar and church. The dates make the difference clear: the memorial stone was erected in November 2010, following the consecration in September of that year—two events with distinct purposes.
