Park and routes for spending time outdoors

A park of nearly four hectares lies between Nagórki and Jaroty. Its illuminated paths invite you to walk and cycle. Terraces, barbecue areas and a playground offer different ways to spend time outdoors. When planning your trip, you can include a visit to the park as a separate activity—whether you’d rather go for a walk, cycle or plan a break at the playground.

A longer cycling tour also starts in Jaroty: the yellow-marked Olsztyn–Zgniłocha cycle route is 24 kilometres long. It starts on the southern edge of Olsztyn, near the Church of Our Lady, Mother of the Church, in Jaroty. Almost the entire route passes through the forest complexes of the Puszcza-Napiwodzko-Ramucka Forest. Its stated length and route through woodland give you concrete points of reference if you’d like to include a cycling tour in your trip.

The green-marked “Do źródeł Łyny” hiking trail in the vicinity of Jaroty offers a different type of route. It is just under 50 kilometres long and leads towards the former village of Jaroty. The route combines a hike with a connection to the area’s history. Its length is an important planning consideration when deciding how much of your stay to devote to a hike like this.

Activities and local history

Jaroty Skatepark offers, among other features, a mini ramp, bank ramps, grind boxes and a quarter pipe. It was built on the site of a disused asphalt court next to a school and is a neighbourhood project funded by Olsztyn’s civic budget. The different features give you a clear idea of what to expect: a facility with a range of skate elements rather than just an open space.

The history of the Polish School in Jaroty is one of the area’s historic stories. It was founded on the initiative of Józef Malewski and Jakub Barczewski and operated from 1930 to 1939 in the Barczewscy family home. A commemorative plaque marking the school’s work was installed in 1957 on the former school building, which is made of red brick and has been preserved. The building now houses a library and a therapeutic day centre. This place brings together a former educational institution, a plaque commemorating it and its present-day uses.

Opposite the preserved school building stands the 19th-century Chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It is dated to 1888–1889 and was incorporated into the present-day Church of Our Lady, Mother of the Church. The chapel is located at 42 Jarocka Street. Another commemorative plaque in Jaroty recalls the arrest of Wojciech Kętrzyński in 1863, after he had supplied weapons to the participants in the January Uprising. These places also add a historical perspective to a stay in Jaroty, beyond its routes and leisure activities.
