City History and Church Art
The historic urban fabric dates from the 16th to the 19th century. It includes the market square and adjoining streets and has been listed in the heritage register since 8 November 1956 under registration number A-181. On a walk through this part of Olecko, you’ll encounter streets and squares that form part of the city’s historic layout.
The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was built in 1859–1861 and has been listed in the heritage register since 15 December 1989 under registration number A-2963. Inside, a wooden Neo-Gothic high altar dating from the second half of the 19th century and two matching side altars define the space. The building stands on the site of a castle built in the 17th century and destroyed by fire in 1822.
By the Lake and on the Trails
A range of leisure interests come together at Jezioro Oleckie Wielkie: the lake is considered a sielawa-type body of water and attracts anglers; it is also the starting point for a scenic kayaking route on the Lega. Skocznia Beach is equipped with a pier, a diving tower, a water slide and a beach volleyball court. There’s also a WOPR lifeguard station, a bar and a water sports equipment rental service. Culture, Events and Relaxation
The Mazurskie Spotkania z Folklorem festival celebrates traditional crafts, music, singing and folk dance and has been held since 1998. The 2025 edition in Olecko included stalls selling homemade food and culinary workshops on Masurian specialities. These programme highlights offer a glimpse into the connection between folklore and regional food culture that distinguishes the festival.
