Dobki lies on the southern shore of Lake Dobskie in the Pojezierze Ełckie, the Ełk Lake District. The village is 7 km west of Olecko. The lakeshore, the surrounding landscape and its location in relation to Olecko provide different geographical reference points for placing it in context. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, this gives you a clear sense of the place: you can consider whether its connection to the lake and the lake district matches your idea of a trip. The village’s historical themes offer further reasons to get to know Dobki better.

An early chapter in the village’s history

Dobki’s development is connected with the settlement of the northeastern territories of the Duchy of Prussia. One specific event took place in 1555: Starost Krzysztof Glaubitz sold Maciej Kibisz four Schulzenhufen for 180 marks. Kibisz undertook to establish a rent-paying village on 40 Hufen under Kulm law. The four Schulzenhufen were the subject of the sale; the obligation to establish the rent-paying village, by contrast, applied to 40 Hufen. The sale and the planned establishment of the village can therefore be understood as two related but distinct parts of the event. The sum, land measures and reference to Kulm law provide specific details alongside the broader settlement context. This offers a precise entry point into an early event in the village’s history, connecting it with named individuals, a purchase and an obligation.

Historical names and places

The historical sequence of names includes Kibisze, the German form Dopken, and Markgrafswelde from 1938. These names offer a different perspective from the sale and the planned village settlement: they place Dobki in different linguistic and historical contexts. Anyone interested in local history can consider this sequence as its own aspect of the region’s past and understand the different names as historical designations for the same place.

Dobki is also home to a former Evangelical cemetery dating from the 19th century. It adds a tangible cultural and historical reference and another historical layer to the settlement and name history. While the event of 1555 takes us back to the early history of settlement, the cemetery points to the 19th century. These are two clearly distinct historical perspectives; the cemetery is another point of historical interest in Dobki.

Dobki along a route

A named route also passes through Dobki: the “Tęczą piętnastu jezior wokół sudawskiej warowni” route is described as marked in green. This route adds another point of interest for trip planning alongside the lakeshore and local history. If a particular route appeals to you, you can take its passage through Dobki into account when planning. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can therefore consider not only the geographical location but also which of the aspects of the village described here matters most to your stay.
