Karwie: Village History and Lake

An early record lists Karwie under its former name, Karffen. On 25 September 1555, Georg von Diebes, starost of Ryn and Szestno, sold four sołectwo hides there for 198 marks to Matz von Mertinsdorf, that is, Maciej from Marcinkowo. The village was required to be settled with 40 hides (668 ha). The record gives the purchase price and the number of hides sold, as well as the settlement requirement—specific figures that trace Karwie’s history back to the 16th century.

Several brick-built residential buildings also provide specific historical reference points. The building at Karwie 3 dates from the late 19th to early 20th century. The residential building at Karwie 9 is a manor house from the 1920s; the building at Karwie 14 dates from the early 20th century. Together, these dates point to different construction periods, without implying a single architectural style or a shared history of origin.

The Evangelical cemetery in Karwie dates from the mid-19th century. It is among the cemeteries in the municipality of Mrągowo that are under the care of the Voivodeship Monuments Conservator.
