Mikolajki can be explored in a variety of ways: along routes through the town and surrounding forest, by the water, through the history of Masuria, or on a passenger boat trip to other places in the region. Which of these aspects you focus on can shape your decision to choose Mikolajki as a holiday destination.
Promenade, harbour and routes
The 1.3-kilometre promenade is the town’s main tourist route. Along it, you will find restaurants, taverns, cafés and shops, as well as water sports equipment rental outlets, sailing harbours and a passenger boat harbour. The town harbour extends along almost the entire length of the promenade, which was modernised in 2022. If you enjoy alternating between lakeside attractions and routes through the town during your stay, this is a distinctive part of the townscape.
For a walking tour of the main sights, there is the 4.7-kilometre “Zwiedzamy Mikołajki” route. “Wzdłuż jeziora Mikołajskiego” offers a different perspective: the 4.9-kilometre route passes through Mikołajki and the surrounding forest, crosses a footbridge to the western shore of the lake and follows the water, with views of the town. The two routes differ in their described itineraries: one focuses on the sights, while the other combines sections through the town and forest with a lakeside path. The signposted cycling routes are circular routes that each start and finish in Mikołajki.
Masurian history and local traditions
The Muzeum Reformacji Polskiej documents the Reformation movement in Poland and Masuria, as well as the history of Mikołajki. Its collections include numerous old printed works, photographs and other documents. The museum thus offers a cultural and historical perspective on the town and the wider region. The neoclassical Protestant church Kościół Ewangelicko-Augsburski Świętej Trójcy is also one of the area’s distinctive historic buildings: it was built in 1842 to a design by Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
The festival traditions offer another way to discover local history. During Festiwal Szantowy, sailing music fills the lakeshore of Jezioro Mikołajskie around the turn of July and August. The festival has been held in Mikołajki for more than 40 years. During Dni Mikołajek, the “Król Sielaw” is launched onto the water every year. This re-enactment draws on one episode of the legend associated with Mikołajki.
Water activities and excursions
The town’s water-based attractions include the Baseny Letnie w Mikołajkach leisure complex, with spacious outdoor pools and a varied water play area for young children, as well as the municipal bathing beach. Showers and lifeguard supervision are available there. Those interested in fishing can fish on nearby lakes and canals with the appropriate licence. Options include a general licence covering numerous lakes and canals, or a licence for a specific special lake.
You can also visit other places by boat: full-day passenger trips run from Mikołajki to Giżycko, Ryn or Ruciane-Nida. The town is also on the “Szlak białych żagli” route through the Great Masurian Lakes, which runs, among other places, via Węgorzewo, Giżycko, Ryn and Mikołajki. When planning your holiday, you can therefore consider whether you would prefer to focus on the town’s trails and culture, activities by the water, or a trip to another destination as well.
Another way to explore Mikołajki is the outdoor adventure game “Mikołajska Pętla Czasu”. It can be played using an app or a paper version. The paper version is available from the tourist information office or can be printed out at home.
