Several holiday themes can be combined in Giżycko: fortifications, technical monuments, city history, water and cycling. The sights and activities mentioned offer concrete starting points. When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to make an initial decision: should your stay focus mainly on culture, water or a cycling route? This makes the kind of holiday you want the starting point for choosing a location.

Fortress, bridge and city history

Boyen Fortress lies on the isthmus between Lakes Kisajno and Niegocin and is considered Giżycko's greatest attraction. Its location directly connects the fortifications with the lake landscape. The swing bridge over the Łuczański Canal offers a different cultural and historical perspective: it is considered a technical monument unique in Europe. Its technical distinction is what makes it stand out.

St. Bruno's Church on Pionierska Street is also one of the city's defining cultural sites: it is the oldest Catholic church in the city. In this way, religious architectural history complements the technical and military monuments, without reducing the sights to a single theme.

Views and water activities

The Water Tower, built in 1900 and restored, serves as a viewpoint. It also houses a café and a small gallery with souvenirs relating to the city's history. Views and a small offering connected with local history thus come together in one place.

Eko Plaża Giżycko is located where Lake Niegocin and the Niegociński Canal meet. At this publicly accessible recreation and tourism complex, you can rent SUP boards, kayaks and boats. The different rental options give you a variety of ways to spend time on the water. Before your visit, check whether the rental services are currently available.

Giżycko is also home to the main port of Żegluga Mazurska. Excursions on passenger ships are recommended from there. This is a different kind of water experience from renting equipment at Eko Plaża: here, the focus is on a passenger trip; there, on choosing between an SUP board, kayak and boat. If you plan a boat trip, check the timetable.

Cycling as a focus in its own right

The eastern section of the Mazurska Pętla Rowerowa runs from Pisz to Węgorzewo via Giżycko and is 103 km long. This adds a clearly defined cycling route to the individual sights and water activities. Its length calls for a different kind of planning than a visit to a single building and helps you decide whether cycling should be a focus of your stay in its own right.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can use these different options as a guide: would you like to focus mainly on exploring sights, enjoying water activities or making room for the cycling route? What you prioritise will affect the pace of your holiday and give your choice of location direction.
