Old Town and Architectural History
The historic centre of Staszów has an approximately square Renaissance street plan. At each corner, two streets meet at right angles. The townhouses around the Rynek date from the 18th century. Individual buildings also reflect different periods: the Gothic Church of St Bartholomew was built of stone and brick in 1342–1343. Inside is a fresco depicting Saint Bartholomew flayed.
Attached to the church is the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary, also known as the Tęczyński Chapel. Katarzyna z Leszczyńskich Tęczyńska had it built between 1610 and 1625; it serves as the tomb mausoleum of her husband and son. The brick bell tower beside the church was added in 1825 in the Neoclassical style. On the Rynek, the Tadeusz Kościuszko Monument, erected in 1864, commemorates the history of the square; it was later moved several times. Another note in local history takes us back to 1825: Count Alfred Potocki donated a clock for the town hall tower that year.
Green Spaces and Paths Around Staszów
There is also nature to discover within the town limits. The “Golejów” nature and landscape complex includes a stand of pine and oak trees over 140 years old. The nearby Golejów forest is, according to the distance information, around three kilometres from Staszów. Its many forest paths and forestry tracks invite you to take walks, hikes and bike rides. Along the way, you can pick mushrooms, berries, blackberries and raspberries.
An unmarked hiking and cycling route starts at the Golejów leisure centre and leads to Rytwiany. Check local conditions before setting off, as the route is unmarked. Another circular route runs through Staszów and the nearby Golejów forests; it opened in November 2021. The forest paths, forestry tracks and two routes offer different ways to explore the surrounding area. When planning, it is worth keeping the characteristics of each route in mind and deciding whether to focus on a walk, a hike or a bike ride.
Urban Recreation and Summer Events
Adama Bienia Park in Staszów has walking paths, a playground and outdoor fitness equipment. This means there are places in town both for a quiet stay surrounded by greenery and for exercise and play. The park complements the historic sights in the centre with another way to spend time in town.
