Bliżyn: Cast-iron art, churches and trails
Accommodation in Bliżyn
Bliżyn brings together water, outdoor activities and a remarkable architectural and cultural history. The Zalew Bliżyński is part of the local landscape, with swimming and leisure facilities; hiking trails begin or end in Bliżyn, and the churches preserve details from different periods. Cast-iron works from the 19th century can also be discovered here. When choosing a holiday apartment, it may help to consider whether you want to spend your vacation days mainly by the lake, on longer trails or visiting historic sites.
Lake, waterfront and leisure
The Zalew Bliżyński lies on the Kamienna River in Bliżyn and covers 10.34 hectares. Its facilities include a bathing area, jetties, a beach and a paddling pool for children. A promenade on the north shore is ideal for a stroll; there are also numerous cycling routes by the reservoir. This means you can choose from several ways to enjoy the water: a walk along the shore, cycling, swimming or play activities. When looking for accommodation, consider whether the lake should be the main focus of your vacation days.
The recreation area includes a playground, an outdoor fitness area, a street workout facility and a pump track. These were among the works completed at the reservoir in 2025. Renovation work affected the 2025 bathing season. If swimming is important to your plans, check the current conditions before your visit.
Hiking trails and choosing a route
Two hiking trails differ in length and direction. The black trail runs for 10.5 kilometres from Sołtyków to Bliżyn. The green trail runs for 24.5 kilometres from Bliżyn to Zagnańsk, making it the longer of the two. It starts at Bliżyn railway station and passes, among other places, Piekło Dalejowskie, the Brama Piekielna natural monument, the Dalejów and Świnia Góra nature reserves, and Dąb Bartek. When planning, you can weigh up the shorter route to Bliżyn against the longer one, which takes in several named sights. Check local conditions before setting out.
Another type of route is the yellow “Miejsc Mocy” pilgrimage cycling trail, which runs through the municipality along the Ubyszów–Bliżyn–Sorbin–Nowki section. It complements the hiking trails with a cycling route designated as a pilgrimage trail. The different route lengths and types give you concrete options if you prefer to spend your days walking or cycling.
Churches and cast-iron art
The Church of St. Zofia and the adjoining cemetery house a unique collection of cast-iron works from the second half of the 19th century. These include railings, fence elements, tombs and stairs made at the local foundry. The Church of St. Zofia can be visited by prior arrangement with the priest of the Parish of St. Louis.
The Church of St. Louis offers a different perspective on Bliżyn’s architectural history: built between 1886 and 1900 from ashlar stone in the Neo-Gothic style, it has a three-aisled layout. Its form is described as a three-aisled basilica with a flat chancel closed on three sides. The pointed-arch windows contain stained glass dating from around 1908, made by Zakłady Górnicze w Bliżynie. The Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship Wooden Architecture Trail passes through Bliżyn and Mroczków; both villages have historic churches in the Kamienna valley.
Palace and historic sites
The Neo-Gothic palace of the Plater family was built at the beginning of the 19th century. Only the west wing, coach house and outbuilding remain; the Gminny Ośrodek Kultury is now based there. Together with the churches, they form a cultural focus distinct from the trails and recreation area by the reservoir.
