Churches and Local History
The Church of St. Jack was built between 1617 and 1620 and consecrated on 10 July 1633 by Bishop T. Oborski. It houses a copy of the miraculous image of Our Lady of the Rosary, dating from the first third of the 15th century. Thus, a 17th-century church building and a much older sacred image come together here.
The Church of St. Jack is part of the former Dominican monastery in Klimontów. The architecture of the monastic complex combines late Gothic, Mannerist and early Baroque forms; the church interior is designed in the Baroque and Rococo styles. The collegiate Church of St. Joseph offers another architectural point of reference: it resembles St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
The town’s origins are also part of its historical story: Klimontów was founded around 1240 by Klemens, castellan of Kraków, from whom the town takes its name. The Synagogue and Its Architecture
The synagogue adds a distinct historical dimension. It is the only surviving material remnant of the former Jewish community in the Klimontów area and is not in regular use. Specific architectural details have been preserved: behind the Ionic portico, two transverse stairways lead to the women’s gallery. A partition between the main hall, vestibule and women’s gallery has also survived. Alongside its significance to local history, these features give the synagogue its own distinctive architectural character.
Loess Landscape and the August Tradition
Around Klimontów, a very dense network of loess valleys and ravines shapes the landscape, complementing the Koprzywianka Valley.
