Church Complex: Building, Chapels and Furnishings
The brick Church of St Mary Magdalene was built in 1440 to replace an older wooden church. The church complex also brings together details from later centuries. The Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre, dating from 1646, lies beneath the eastern bay of the presbytery. It has a barrel vault with lunettes. The complex also includes the brick Innocentium burial chapel, dating from the mid-17th century.
The presbytery has three bays, a polygonal end and is supported by buttresses. Its barrel vault with groins is decorated with stucco. This description therefore ranges from the division of the space and its supports to the decoration of the vault. The furnishings add another historical layer: the late Baroque altars date from the 18th century. Their structures are silvered and gilded, and they also feature gilded carved decorations. The church also has a choir gallery and an organ.
A three-axis Neo-Baroque gate with an openwork upper section and rich sculptural decoration leads to the church building. Together with the chapels and interior furnishings, it offers a wide range of architectural details. The dates span the church’s construction in the 15th century, the chapels of the 17th century and the altars of the 18th century. Those interested in sacred architecture can thus distinguish the various building and furnishing elements rather than seeing the church through a single feature alone.
