A Church Between Gothic and Rococo
The Church of the Assumption of Mary was already standing in the 14th century. This single-nave Gothic stone church has a narrower, rectangular chancel. Its furnishings include an image of Our Lady of Consolation, created in the 17th century and venerated for its miraculous powers, as well as a stone Baroque baptismal font from the first half of the 18th century. The pulpit is in the Rococo style. The church’s architectural history thus combines with later art forms and a tradition of religious imagery.
The ensemble also includes a tall bell tower with five bells. The oldest bears a Gothic inscription dated 1528. The inscription provides a clearly dated point of reference within the church ensemble, alongside its architecture and furnishings.
Experience and Recognise Porcelain
At the Żywe Muzeum Porcelany, a guide leads a group of visitors through specially equipped workshops and demonstrates several stages of the manufacturing process using a porcelain kitten figurine as an example. Visitors can also get a look inside an old, original porcelain kiln, which they can enter even though it is no longer in operation. There, a guide explains how the kiln was once used to fire porcelain. The workshop stations focus on production; at the kiln, the focus is on its former function.
Porcelain is also a recurring theme at other attractions. Porcelanowy Rynek is a public square and an attraction; its benches and fountain were designed after the well-known Ćmielów Empire collection. The designs for the bronze sculptures in Aleja Małp were inspired by the porcelain painting collection “Piękne Małpy Europy.” The collection is shown during a visit to the Żywe Muzeum Porcelany. Porcelain motifs can thus be encountered as a design inspiration, as a collection and in the designs for sculptures.
