Baranów Sandomierski: Castle, Routes and the Vistula

The castle and unusual museum exhibits

The Renaissance castle is commonly called “Mały Wawel” (“Little Wawel”) and is surrounded by a 14-hectare park with a golf course. The castle houses a museum of 16th- and 17th-century interiors, where the history of the castle and its owners is presented. Historical interiors are thus brought together with the story of the building and its owners.

In the exhibition hall of the castle museum, the exhibition “Historia ludzi i miejsc zapisana w obrazach” features a tabletop model of an achromatic stereoscope made by Smith, Beck & Beck in the mid-19th century. The object draws attention to an optical device and the way images were viewed in its time—a different approach to history from the castle rooms.

A boat considered one of the longest of its kind in Poland and Europe is on display in the Archaeological Hall. It lay on the bed of the Vistula for centuries and came to the castle under unusual circumstances; it probably dates from the Middle Ages. Its long time on the riverbed and unusual journey to the castle give the exhibit a story of its own, alongside the rooms and collections.

Routes with different orientations

The green-marked Hiking Trail No. 7 runs via Majdan Królewski, Huta Komorowska, Poręby Dębskie, Nowa Dęba, Rozalin, Ślęzaki, Dąbrowica and Skopanie to Baranów Sandomierski. The “Szlak Wisły” waterway starts either on the Wisłoka near Wola Zdakowska or on the Czarna near Połaniec. It passes through Baranów Sandomierski, Tarnobrzeg and Sandomierz, continuing as far as Zawichost and Annopol. The two routes therefore differ in their geographical layout: the hiking trail passes through a series of named places on its way to Baranów, while the waterway has two alternative starting points and passes through several named places. Which route you include in your plans depends on whether you prefer to follow the land route or the waterway.

Landscape in the wider municipality

The Tarnobrzeg Lake was created in the wider area around Baranów on the site of the former mine of the Zakłady Przetwórstwa Siarki “Siarkopol”. It covers almost 500 hectares. The former mine site gives this landscape a different historical context from the castle rooms and the boat from the Vistula.

The southern part of the municipality of Baranów Sandomierski also includes a forested area and the “Stawy Krasiczyńskie” pond complex, a fish farm. This makes it possible to distinguish between the town and the wider municipality when planning: the castle, museum and historical objects are in Baranów; the forest and pond complex are in the southern part of the municipality.
