In 1946, the village experienced the forced expulsion of its entire population; most of the buildings were burned down. Buildings in the hamlet of Garb remained standing until the 1950s.

The summit of Smerek rises to 1,222 metres in the Western Bieszczady and forms the western continuation of the ridge of Połonina Wetlińska.

Smerek’s documented heritage includes a wooden Orthodox church dedicated to Saint Demetrius the Great Martyr, as well as former industrial and rural buildings.
