Beneath the Market Square and Among Historic Buildings

The Podziemne Przejście Turystyczne runs beneath the townhouses at Rynek 4, 5 and 6. The underground passage is 186 metres long and extends up to 6 metres below the surface of the market square. These dimensions alone offer a different perspective on the central square: instead of simply taking in the building façades and activity above, the experience leads into the space below. The specific details of its length and depth also give a clear idea of what makes this distinctive urban experience special.

Above ground, too, individual buildings tell stories of different eras. The Kamienica Orsettich has housed the Muzeum w Jarosławiu since 1945. The clock on the town hall tower dates from 1896; it was made in Vienna, in the workshop of Richard Liebing. The town hall is first mentioned in the last quarter of the 15th century. Church History and Places of Remembrance

The Kolegiata pw. Bożego Ciała, originally dedicated to św. Janów, is considered the oldest post-Jesuit church in Poland. The high altar contains the image Matki Boskiej Śnieżnej Królowej Rodzin. It survived the church fire of 1862 and is especially venerated. The combination of the church’s history and the fate of this image makes the collegiate church a destination in its own right for anyone interested in sacred art and historical traditions.

Another historic site is the Mykwa, a ritual bathhouse. Construction of the new Mykwa at Spytka 11 began in 1906. During the typhus epidemic of 1920, at the request of the district head, the Jewish Community made the Mykwa available to all residents. The site’s history is also a story about a specific moment of people living together in the town.

Townscape and More Travel Ideas

Jarosław lies on the boundary between the Rzeszów Foothills, also known as the Jarosław Foothills in this section, and the Lower San Valley. The surrounding area has preserved oxbow lakes formed by the river’s repeated shifts in course, known as Sanowiska. Deep ravines typical of loess areas, called Wądoły, are also found nearby. These landforms give the area around the town a character distinct from its buildings and church history.

In the wider Powiat jarosławski, the San flows through the district, and a 70-hectare reservoir lies in Radymno. The waters there invite visitors to swim, enjoy water sports and fish. These activities are part of the wider travel region, not Jarosław alone. Events also shape the cultural scene: the Festiwal Muzyki Fortepianowej im. Marii Turzańskiej is Jarosław’s most important annual classical music festival and has been held since 2012. The Jarmark Jarosławski takes place in the Old Town towards the end of August. The two events offer different ways to experience the town: classical music at one, and an Old Town market at the other.
