City history in streets and squares
The preserved urban layout dates from the late 13th and early 14th centuries. For a tangible glimpse of older city structures, visit ul. Murarska, where you’ll find single-storey townhouses dating from the early 19th century. The street was built on the foundations of demolished defensive walls. A restored section of the medieval city fortifications can also be seen on ul. Ogrodowa and ul. Bramkowa. These places tell different chapters of the city’s history without relying on a single building.
The Church of Saints Philip and James is another of Żory’s historic landmarks. Construction began towards the end of the 14th century. At Muze.ON| Polskie Poznawanie Świata| Żory, an exhibition of objects focuses on the history of the city and region, as well as non-European cultures. The Święto Ogniowe keeps a special connection with the city’s history alive: Żory celebrates it every year on 11 May in remembrance of the great fire of 11 May 1702. If you’re interested in local traditions, this is a clear historical occasion tied to a set date.
Parks, leisure and water
In central Żory, Cegielnia Park offers several ways to get active, including a playground with a ropes course, a skatepark and a roller-skating rink. You can practise cycling in a traffic garden. Choosing Żory as a holiday destination

It was created in the workshop of sculptor Tomasz Wenklar from Tychy. The restored Pałac w Baranowicach dates from the 17th century; its English-style park features numerous old trees and natural monuments.
