Rybnik – Culture, Landscapes and Discoveries
Accommodation in Rybnik
Between Rivers, Highlands and Woodland Scenery
Rybnik is located in the Rybnik Highlands, in the south-west of the Silesian Voivodeship and within the Kotlina Raciborsko-Oświęcimska. The city lies on the Nacyna and Ruda rivers, at an elevation of between 210 and 290 metres above sea level. Rybnik also plays an important role in the Kraina Górnej Odry tourism region: it is one of the region’s most important cities. This location provides a regional framework for planning a trip between river landscapes and highlands.
Zalew Rybnicki is a 5.5 km² reservoir surrounded by forests and located in the Cysterskie Kompozycje Krajobrazowe Rud Wielkich Landscape Park. Here, water, woodland and protected scenery offer a different focus from the region’s architectural and industrial heritage. If you would like nature and landscapes to be central to your choice of holiday apartment, you can take this aspect of Rybnik into account.
Another natural and religious site is Studzienka: this natural spring lies in Podlesie Forest, near Shaft IV of the Jankowice coal mine, and is considered a tourist attraction. Studzienka is also the setting for numerous religious celebrations and pilgrimages. The site is therefore of interest not only as a spring and excursion destination, but also for its religious significance.
Technology and Discoveries at the Ignacy Mine
Several different visitor attractions come together at the Zabytkowa Kopalnia Ignacy. It is home to SOWA, a small science centre created through cooperation with the Centrum Nauki Kopernik in Warsaw. The interactive exhibition “Wiek Pary” features storytelling and hands-on exploration stations. Visitors interested in science and technology will find a different experience here from a visit to the region’s churches and historic sites.
Demonstrations of the steam engine are also part of the offer at the Zabytkowa Kopalnia Ignacy. They take place on Sundays from April to September at 14:00, 15:00, 16:00 and 17:00; from October to March, demonstrations are held at 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00. The site also has a 46-metre-high observation tower. Its viewing platform offers a 360-degree panoramic view. Technology, an interactive exhibition and the view are thus three different reasons to include this site in your travel plans.
Churches and Historic Sites
The Minor Basilica of St Anthony of Padua in Rybnik is a Neo-Gothic church. It was built between 1903 and 1906 to a design by architect Ludwik Schneider. A different historical note is struck by the wooden Church of St Catherine of Alexandria and Our Lady of the Rosary in Wielopole. It dates from around 1543 and features Late Gothic ornamental and figurative polychrome paintings.
The Corpus Christi Church in Jankowice was probably built around 1670. Its furnishings include three pseudo-Baroque altars, a tabernacle from the second half of the 17th century, and a Baroque organ dating from around 1700. In Rybnik, the Edukatorium Juliusz is located in the former Juliusz hospital complex. The history of this site goes back to the start of work on the hospital complex in 1868. Together, these places illustrate different chapters in the region’s religious and architectural history, which cannot be reduced to a single style or period.
Cycling Routes and Getting There
Cyclists can choose from circular routes of different lengths. The circular cycling route around Rybnik-Boguszowice, number 290, is 14.20 km long. The cycling circuit from Rybnik via Rudy covers 41 km and runs mainly through green areas. When choosing between these routes, you can take their stated lengths into account, as well as the share of green space described for the longer route.
Rybnik Główny railway station has rail connections to the Upper Silesian conurbation, the Baltic coast, the mountains and destinations abroad. This means that, as well as the local attractions, connections to more distant destinations may also be relevant to your travel plans. When looking for a holiday apartment, you could first consider whether technology and science, church art, landscapes or cycling should shape your stay.
